Eric Cutler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 30, 2010.
Eric Cutler of Dedham died on March 30th at the age of 91. He grew up in Needham, the son of Roger Cutler and Leslie B. Cutler, the first woman to be elected to the Massachusetts state senate. Mr. Cutler lived most of his life in Westwood and Dedham. He attended Charles River School in Dover and Noble and Greenough School in Dedham. He was a member of the class of 1940 at Harvard University where he was captain of the swimming team and a member of the Porcellian Club. Mr. Cutler served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed in Italy. He was Assistant Director of Admissions at Harvard University from 1950 to 1965 and then Assistant Director of Athletics from 1966 to 1983. He was also coach of the women's squash team for a number of years until his retirement. After his retirement he coached the squash team at Noble and Greenough School from 1983 to 1998. An avid birder and environmentalist Mr. Cutler served as a director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society and also as a councillor at the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences. In addition he devoted many hours to collecting stamps. He was a passionate sports fan, especially baseball and soccer. He touched many lives, especially those of his "kids" (advisees) at Harvard. He was devoted to his family and loved vacations and summers with his children and grandchildren at Squam Lake in New Hampshire, where he could feed the hummingbirds and listen to the loons. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his children: Erica (Labouisse), Abbot, Joshua, Elisabeth and eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and his brother Robert. His son Nathan predeceased him in 1998. There will be a private graveside ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences in Manomet, Massachusetts.

Cut was truly one of a kind! Some of my fondest memories at Harvard were with him taking the JV tennis team on a southern trip in late winter/early spring 1977 to brush up our games before the season. One thing we all learned was that Cut had never eaten in a fast food restaurant up to that time! apparently that kind of food just did not register with him. He must have been 58 years old - and had never consumed a McDonald's french fry! Who lived like that!

Further Cut had amazing contacts wherever we landed to play tennis. In Charleston, he set it up for us to play the University of Charleston men's tennis team - surely because he knew the athletic director or others there. It was a very difficult match for us - concentration was tough. The outdoor courts had ball girls - affectionally called lovesets - long legged, short skirted, southern beauties, one assigned to each court, who would gather up the tennis balls after each point and hand them to the server. Keeping track of the score was nearly impossible. Cut know exactly what he was doing - including having the lovesets join the after match party that evening.

To this day I wish that trip with Cut had never ended!

God loves Cut - and so do so many who had the delightful fortune to spend time with him.

Eric was a great man. I'll remember him always as I grew up. Thanksgivings with Lizzie's apple pie. A family reunion at Longwood Towers. Lunches at Aunt Sally and Uncle Herbert's. Dinners at Mom's. Eric always made you feel welcome. This is a big loss to all his family and friends. I will always remember him.

Love,

Tuck Cutler
