Eric Lessard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 24 to Oct. 26, 2023.
Gainesville - Eric Vincent Lessard died October 10, 2023 after living with Lyme disease for nineteen years. Eric was born January 9, 1970 in Montreal, Canada to Elizabeth and Jean-Claude Lessard. He grew up in Ann Arbor, MI, Durham NC, Jacksonville and Gainesville, FL, graduating from Gainesville's Eastside High School in 1987. An alumnus of Reed College, he worked as an organizer for the International Hotel and Restaurant Workers Union in Los Angeles for several years before joining John Brown and Associates, a criminal defense private investigation firm. He worked around the US and internationally, including Mexico and China, exposing the skullduggery of government agencies, and spent years working for defendants in a prison riot case. Eric pursued adventure, whether it was exploring jungle ruins in Central America, jumping freight cars in the northwest and Mexico, or snowboarding in the California mountains. He returned to Gainesville in 2016 and continued investigative work for lawyers until he became too ill. He tirelessly researched Lyme treatments, but was unable to find a cure, remaining stoic and brave through many setbacks. He was proud to achieve Master Mason status in the Gainesville lodge, and joined the Morocco Temple of the Shriners in Jacksonville. Eric is survived by his parents, Elizabeth McCulloch and Joe Jackson of Gainesville, his father Jean-Claude Lessard of Lethbridge, Canada, stepsisters Arianah Jennings and Leah Newsom, seven cousins, and two aunts, as well as many friends in Los Angeles, Gainesville and around the world.

I only knew Eric well when he was a little boy in Durham, North Carolina. At that time, his mother Lizzie was in law school at Duke. Their apartment was just a few steps from mine so we had easy back and forth visits for 3 years. After they moved to Florida and I moved to New Jersey, they also visited me.
Eric, as I remember, was extraordinarily gorgeous, mischievous, smart and fun! Liz was a loving devoted single Mom.
It's heartbreaking beyond words that Eric passed away so young. May he rest in peace.

I only knew Eric as a young boy with his mom Liz in Jacksonville. He had the wind in his sails. Such a tragedy that his life was cut short. My condolences to all that will miss him and my love and hugs to his mom.

I first met Eric when he was a small boy, moving to Jacksonville, Florida with his mother Liz. We were happy to watch him grow up.

Eric was much beloved. He formed deep, abiding friendships everywhere he went. I was blessed to have been one of his best friends. Though we will sorely miss him, his wisdom and generosity of spirit live on in everyone who knew him. Rest in Peace my dear friend Eric.

I'm so very sorry to read this sad news, Liz.... I know you don't remember me from EMU/Ann Arbor... but I remember when you went to Spain and met 'Johnny' and I remember you telling me about the oranges fresh off the trees... and I remember baby Eric and when you left for Chapel Hill... This is unthinkable and I'm so very very very sorry...I'm glad to be 'in touch' via Facebook...You were fearless and made my world so much bigger.... I know your memories are blessings....but I'm so VERY sorry.

Brother Eric was a very good man. Intelligent, polite, witty, and caring. His Brothers will never forget him as he has impacted our lives as much as we impacted his. We love you Brother Eric!

"The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord makes his face shine upon you, And be gracious unto you; The Lord lift up His Countenance upon you, And give you peace."

In Loving Memory of Eric
I am not a lover of babies, but Eric was a charmer as an infant. He grew up to be one of the livest wires imaginable, a true adventurer. And he was brilliant. When his birthday came around each January, I used to google "books for geniuses" to try to find something he would enjoy reading. Eric relished life and was fun to be around, but he was also very private. Nothing can dislodge him from the special corner of my mind he inhabits, so though he´s gone, he remains, in spirit, a good companion. (Aunt) Doris Eder
