Erma Hiers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 5 to Sep. 5, 2014.
Erma Agnes Mole Hiers Mrs. Erma Agnes Mole Hiers of Railroad Avenue in Brunson, died early Monday morning, July 28, 2014 in the John Edward Harter Nursing Center in Fairfax. Erma's parents were J.C and Estelle Mole of Hampton. She was born November 4, 1935. Her brothers were James of Shreveport, La., and Marvin of Hampton. Her sister Myrtis Calvert lives in Hampton. Erma and Tom's daughter, Dawn lives in Virginia Beach, Va. Tommy (III) lives in Charleston with Pam and their children Anna, and Thomas (IV). Tom served twenty-eight years as a Navy Chaplain and retired as a Navy Captain. Thirteen years of that time was with the Marines. Erma was the First Lady at four civilian churches prior to the Navy, and senior Chaplain's wife at chapels at the U.S. Naval Academy, Amphibious Base Little Creek, Parris Island, and twice at Charleston Naval Base. After retirement from the Navy she was with Pastor Tom at four interim pastorates, one senior pastor role, and very briefly at first Baptist Allendale. Erma's quiet moral strength and unwavering faith in a loving God shaped her life. Her fierce loyalty, unwavering support, and refined social graces, were powerful resources in Tom's ministry as a military missionary and as a civilian pastor. Her education, training and experience as a licensed Social Worker, shaped her as an advocate for Navy and Marine Corps wives. The Marines at Parris Island recognized her for reorganization and revitalization of the American Red Cross Volunteers and the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society. This was the kind of woman Solomon wrote about in the book of Proverbs when he penned "Many women do noble things but you surpass them all. Give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." (Proverbs 31:29&31) Funeral services were held at 11 A.M. Friday, August 1st at the Allendale First Baptist Church, with burial following at 2 P.M. in the Beaufort National Cemetery. Services were directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street, West; Hampton, SC 29924 (803-943-3352). The Family suggests that instead of flowers, memorials in her memory may be sent to the Allendale First Baptist Church (Special Projects Fund) 259 Memorial Avenue South; Allendale, SC 29810.
