NEWBURYPORT — Ermont Harry Goldsmith, 85, longtime Newburyport resident, entered eternal sleep on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 at his home, surrounded by family, after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years. He was the loving husband of the late Doris (Russell) Goldsmith, who died of cancer on April 24, 1994.
Born March 18, 1922 in Sanford, Maine, he was the son of the late Harry and Anna (Winslow) Goldsmith, and moved to Newburyport as a small child. A veteran of World War II, he served with the United States Army from Nov. 10, 1942 to April 6, 1946, honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal.
His only sibling, Donald F. Goldsmith, died in the invasion of Normandy, France during World War II. After the war, Ermont began working at Towle Silversmiths of Newburyport, retiring after 39 years of service.
Mr. Goldsmith was an avid gardener. He enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables, and for many years canned fresh vegetables from his garden. He prided himself in doing most of his own home and car repairs. He also built several beautiful doll houses from scratch. Throughout the years, he had many pet cats and dogs, all of which he loved dearly.
Survivors include one son Ermont H Goldsmith Jr. and his companion Sandy Arsenault of Hudson, N.H.; daughter Linda (Goldsmith) Anderson and husband David of Penacook, N.H.; and daughter Janet Goldsmith-Crump and husband Frank of Haverhill; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Goldsmith of Newburyport; six grandchildren, Heathyr (Goldsmith) Gavlik and husband Jamie of Tyngsboro; Darryn Goldsmith of Clinton; Kristin Anderson of Concord, N.H.; Brittany Anderson of Penacook, N.H.; Matthew Crump of Austin, Texas and Joshua Crump of Virginia Beach, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Jason, Joshua and Jamey Lynn Gavlik of Tyngsboro.
