Erna Hennig Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 23, 2015.
ERNA M. "POLLY" HENNIG, 93, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at Parkview Memorial Hospital. Born on Dec. 5, 1921 in Browns-town, Ind., she was a daughter of the late Louis and Selma (Pohlman) Pollert. Polly spent more than 25 years teaching in Lutheran Schools. Most of that time was spent in Fort Wayne's Zion School, but for eight years she and her husband helped prepare the children of Lutheran missionaries in South India for future education in this country. During retirement, she was active in her church, New Life Lutheran; she enjoyed teaching English to Vietnamese people; and her special joy was to share the Gospel whenever there was an opportunity to do so. Until recently, she taught Bible stories to the children in both the New Life English and Burmese services. Another activity of vital interest to Polly was involvement in what is known as "Bethania Kids"- a ministry in South India whereby about 1000 of the poorest children's physical and spiritual needs are being met. "Polly was endlessly loving and compassionate. Her life's mission was to share the Gospel and to help those who were less fortunate". She is survived by her sons, Gene (Kristin) Hennig of Chanhassen, Minn. and Mark Hennig of Fort Wayne; her daughter, Anne (Jim) Wunderlich of Libertyville, Ill.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Gloria Hennig of Seward, Neb. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert Hennig in 1996; her son, Robert Hennig; and her brother, Harold Pollert. Funeral Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church, 2313 South Hanna St., Fort Wayne, with visitation one hour prior. Burial at Concordia Cemetery Gardens, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to New Life Lutheran Church or Bethania Kids.

I'm sorry for your loss, too. I remember "Mrs Hennig" as my ever-patient elementary teacher, way up there in the blessed Palni Hills. I fear that my own far-from-saintly antics would have taxed the patience of a saint, but "Mrs Hennig" was up to the job.

Polly was always so kind and went out of her way to help me. I would get rides to church and other places when I didn't have a car. She was a good listener and prayer warrior. I will miss Polly! May God be with her family in this time of grief.

Al & Polly made a trip to Chengdu, China in the summer of 1987 to teach English and let their light shine. During that time they helped a young lady on the same trip, Nila Conrad, who became my wife in the summer of 88. Polly was always kind, serving others in many ways, and lifting up Jesus our Savior. Al & Polly gave us a good example to follow.

Your parents were both so dear to our family. Your mother faithfully visited my parents in their later years and had such a way of sharing her faith. Her sweetness and her gentle smile were extraordinary. Jill and John Nichols (Brueggemam)...former members of Zion

Sorry for your loss, Hennig family. Polly was one of my parents' favorite people and they get to enjoy her company once again. She has a lot of good people celebrating her arrival! Blessings on her journey and each of yours.

My condolences to the Hennig family. She was always a very kind and warm and giving person - I remember her always giving me cookies whenever I came over to see her late son Bob, and always being interested in whatever boyhood projects we had. She was a great person, sorry she has passed. David Bosch
(Family notes: my mother Eloise Bosch is living in Oman at age 95, but my father Donald Bosch passed away 3 years ago at age 94. Both were friends of Albert and Polly Hennig.)

My condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with Mark and the entire family. May our Lord bless and comfort all during this time of grief.
She was a great influence and helped shape my life in so many different ways, I could fill up this entire book page.
She was so kind and generous to not only me, when I was young, but my family as I got older.
My daughter Elizabeth said she will never forget her kindness and the stories she shared during the time they spent together. We are so very saddened by the news
I will miss her for all my days but she will still live in all our hearts and memory and we take comfort in knowing she is resting in peace with our Lord .
It was truly an honor for all of us to have known her.

We've known Polly, Al, & their children since they arrived in Fort Wayne during 1967 at which time I was a member at Zion, and Joanne was a 2nd grade teacher at Peace.

During Luther Year 1983, we had the opportunity of crossing paths with Al & Polly in Leipzig, Germany during the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of reformer Martin Luther's birth.

When the couple retired in 1984, I had the pleasure of producing an audio slide presentation of their lives. In my thorough research, I learned how Polly & Al already presented the Gospel message to those in darkness while attending Concordia Teachers College in the Chicago suburb of River Forest.

The goal of everyone should be to make certain when their life on earth ends that they go to Heaven, and that they take as many others with them as possible. Polly knew and believed the meaning of the couplet, "Born once, die twice, born twice, die once.". She is now alive with the saints in heaven. Polly and those in charge at Bethania Kids in India lived/live knowing, "Only one life, and soon it's past, only what's done for Christ will last."
