Ernest Cobb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 26, 2024.
Ernest Leroy Cobb, known to all as Ernie, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 23, 2024, in Davis, California at the age of 89. Born in Connecticut to Bertha (Akley) Cobb and Ernest Samuel Cobb, Ernie was the middle of three brothers. He was predeceased by his older brother Ellsworth "Lee" Cobb and younger brother William "Bill" Cobb.

As a young child Ernie moved with his family to rural Wardsboro, Vermont. There he graduated from Leland and Gray Seminary before embarking on a life of service and adventure. Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with distinction in Naval Aviation aboard the USS Coral Sea. His time in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of duty and camaraderie that would remain with him throughout his life.

After completing his military service, Ernie returned to Connecticut, married Carlene (Bird) Cooley, and began a 25-year career with the West Hartford Fire Department. Known for his dedication, he earned the respect of colleagues and community members. Upon retiring from firefighting, Ernie and Carlene fulfilled a lifelong dream by moving to Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Together they built their own house and enjoyed many happy years surrounded by the natural beauty of the Cape.

Later in life, Ernie and Carlene relocated to Davis, California, to be closer to family who had moved there. They became cherished members of the Carlton Senior Living community where they formed lasting friendships and shared countless memories.

Ernie had an extraordinary ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He never met a stranger and was known for his kind heart and attentive nature. His humor shone through in everyday moments-often expressed through the funny t-shirts he wore that brought smiles to those around him. At 83 he even attended the Burning Man festival earning a playa name of "Bert & Ernie".

Ernie is lovingly remembered by his children: Michelle "Shelley" Dowling (Andrew) of Davis; Glenn Cooley of Davis; Laurie Cobb of Springfield, Vermont; and Daniel Cobb of Jamaica, Vermont. He also leaves behind cherished granddaughters Caroline Dowling and Katherine Dowling of Davis as well as Chelsey Cooley of Americus, Kansas. Ernie was predeceased by his wife Carlene; son Gregg Cooley (Sharon) of Meriden, Connecticut; and grandson Sean Cooley (Christine) of Altadena, California.

A funeral service will take place at Smith Funeral Home in Davis on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 11 a.m. All who wish to attend and lament his passing are invited. Memorial donations may be made in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or The Salvation Army.

Ernie lived a life defined by love for family, service to others, and an enduring sense of joy that touched everyone who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have shared in his journey. May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
