McCARTY, Ernest Dewey "Mick," 71, of Midlothian, Virginia, passed away March 11, 2015, after a brief illness. He was born April 14, 1943, in Goldsboro, N.C., where he lived before moving to Chapel Hill, N.C. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Marguerite and Ernest Dewey of Goldsboro, N.C.; and his mother, Jean D. Spicer of Durham N.C. His father Marquis McCarty died during WWII. He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy, where he was a world class member of the swim team, and attended Elon University in North Carolina. Mick proudly served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service and was active during the Bay of Pigs Invasion. After leaving the Navy, he moved to Richmond in 1967, and attended VCU. Mick loved life, lived it to the fullest, and lived it his way. He loved building houses, his vegetable garden, his dogs (Shannon, Cate, Cooper and Duie), and was devoted to his family and friends. To the McCarty Family,

On behalf of the Charleston Base SUBVETS and Swamp Fox Chapter SUBVETS WWII, I offer you our sincere condolences on Mick's passing. We grieve with you on the loss of your loved one and all SUBVETS and their families have your family in our thoughts and prayers. There is no expiration date on the back of our dolphins and Mick will always be remembered as a Brother of the Phin and a great Patriot.
