Ernest Oskin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 30 to Jan. 31, 2024.
Easton - Ernest Thomas Oskin passed away peacefully on January 27, 2024, he was 96 years old.

Ernest Oskin was born in Chicago, Illinois, but as a teenager, the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florda. He was drafted in October 1944 for WWII, but they dropped the bomb in August, ending the war. Ernie graduated from the University of Florida in 1949, an all-male college at that time. As a chemical engineer, he worked for Olin Mathieson Corporation in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

For the Korean War, Ernie was status 1A, so he spent two years as a chemical engineer at the Edgewood Chemical Center outside of Baltimore. After the war, he worked for B. F. Goodrich in Marietta, Ohia.

Along with many others, he used the G. I. Bill and gained a fellowship to go for a master's degree in Plastics Engineering at Princeton University. He loved the area and afterwards took a job at DuPont in the Plastics Center in Wilmington, DE. There he met and married his wife, Barbara.

Later, he was transferred to the Detroit area, where many molders were working for the automotive companies. He worked in technical sales and got to know many molders and their problems in the Midwest. During this time, Ernie and Barb had their two children.

After seven years with DuPont, Ernie was able to start a small molding company in St. Clair, Michigan, a small town across from Canada near Lake Huron. They became part of the community, as did the business, and they raised their family there. During this time, they traveled with the children on vacations or to see Barbara's mother in Maryland.

When Barb's mother passed away in 1981, they decided to keep the family farm on the Miles River across from St. Michaels. After 35 years, Ernie sold the business and their home in St. Clair and retired to Maryland. They lived on the farm most of the year but bought an apartment in Washington, DC, for the three winter months.

They enjoyed the advantages the city had to offer, the farm and the water and were able to travel often; but after being married 65 years, they realized it was time to come to Londonderry, where they moved in 2022.

Ernie is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughter Mary Catherine Mueller of Easton, MD; a son John Bennett Oskin of Colorado Springs, CO; and 2 grandchildren.

Services will be held on Friday February 2, 2024, at 10 Am at All Faith's Chapel in Tunis Mills, MD. A burial will follow at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford MD.
