When I stepped off the greyhound in 1978 I met Ernie in Rent A Jalopy at 5 th and Centre St. After deciding to come to Alberta, in my early 20s where the streets were paved with gold.
He was very kind, thoughtful and helpful given that I had a few references no credit cards and I needed a ride to get around. I rented many a jalopy off him, and we became good friends. I remember Bernice very well, and their two young children and I became a family friend at that time in my life. Ernie would be amazed to know that I went on to be a commercial contractor here in Calgary and even though I am now almost 70 I still have 14 people working full-time and made Calgary home.
I have spent every winter for the past 40 years in warm tropical places, and I have now moved to Vancouver island, but I keep a house in Calgary. It all started with Ernie during those times. Finally .....I know that he had an apartment at Point Mckay. I have been the only exterior painting contractor at Point Mckay for the last 30 years and it all continues.
My nature of doing nice things for people comes a lot from Ernie and Bernice, and, of course, my dear mother, who is long departed.
I hope Bernice is doing well and of course, there are two delightful young children who are no longer young children ha ha. I´m sure Ernie´s in a happy place, and we will all be along soon to join him to continue the goodness.
I only learned today that Ernie passed away in 2008 so I´m a little late to the party... Oops

Dearest Bernie, Joceyln and Blair,
We are so thankful we were able to attend the service for Ernie on Tuesday. You have made our lives fuller and richer by knowing you. I personally can recall the wonderful family times we shared with you. Ernie was forever warm, welcoming and his caring smile, words, and gestures made me know I was cared for. I always admired his calmness and patience with everyone. He was a wonderful husband and dad ... and it showed! God Bless. You are in our prayers. ~ Dorraine

Bernice, Blair, Jocelyn and Family;
What a true Gentleman Ernie was and continues to be in our hearts. He was such a classy person I called him "Snappy" as he was such a 'snappy' dresser.
A great friend who I loved having lunches with and talking about children and old times watching them grow up.
I can honestly say that I loved him and take solice in the fact that I told him that.
We will be together again.
