ERVIN GONZALEZ Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2017.
GONZALEZ,ERVIN A. 57, beloved husband, friend, role model, and pillar of the community, passed away on Thursday, June 8, 2017. A brilliant and masterful trial attorney, Ervin is survived by the love of his life, his wife Janice, and his loving family, including Summer, Zuzu, Hammer and Duke. The son of Cuban Exiles, Ervin was born in Miami and attended La Salle High School where he excelled in both sports and academics, earning a place in the school's hall of fame. He graduated summa cum laude from St. Thomas University in 1982 and obtained his juris doctorate, cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law in 1985. In 2000, he joined the law firm of Colson Hicks Eidson where he gained national prominence, trying some the most pivotal cases in the country. Throughout his career, he obtained 33 multi-million dollar verdicts, many of which have led to important regulation and industry changes. He was selected to serve on the Plaintiff Steering Committee for both the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and Chinese Drywall playing a key leadership role in the litigation of both cases, ultimately leading to multiple multi-million dollar and multi- billion dollar settlements. Among many of his notable cases was a $100 million class action settlement for the desecration of graves in a Jewish cemetery. Committed to furthering his profession, Ervin served as governor of The Florida Bar, president of the Dade County Bar Association, president of the Dade County Trial Lawyers Association, a member of the National Board of Trustees of The National Institute of Trial Advocacy, and the American Board of Trial Advocates. He also served as an adjunct professor at the University Of Miami School Of Law where he enjoyed mentoring young law students. Ervin was proud to have been honored as one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the Nation by Hispanic Business Magazine. As one of the nation's premier trial attorneys, he set the standard for the profession in his compassion and vigorous advocacy for those who suffered grievances and injustices at the hands of others. He will be remembered for his intellect, skill and ability to befriend and defend the rights of people from all walks of life with a zest and dedication that was unrivaled. Ervin was a consummate Floridian, whether boating on Biscayne Bay, rooting for the Miami Marlins, or taking long trail rides on horseback through the Redlands. While he loved the outdoors, what brought him most joy was being alongside his high school sweetheart and adoring wife of nearly 30 years Janice. A dedicated husband, a thoughtful friend, and a trusted colleague, Ervin will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.A viewing will be held Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Vior Funeral Home, 291 NW 37th Avenue in Miami followed by a mass on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of The Little Flower, 2711 Indian Mound Trail in Coral Gables.

It's just over 3 years my friend that you left us on earth. We think of you often Erv. One day we will all be together. Miss you and think of you so often. Janice is doing such a beautiful job keeping us all connected to you. 2020 would not of made you happy. What a crazy time we live in, covid19, pandemic and working from home, but somehow I know you would of made it the best of times consisting of: Sunset boat cruises, paddleboarding, riding Hammer & Duke, or running or hiking in the mtns. You would of made it memorable. We miss you!! You will always be a part of us all, your classmates, your friends... love you always Terry & Max.

I was just thinking of you last week the memories we shared old Miami training at Brodies Gym with the owner and his son running around barefoot and there German Shepherd slobbering all over the equipment. We had some good laughs.

It's only fitting that a man whose command of language allowed him to touch so many lives should have led a life that words are ill-suited for anything but the most superficial descriptions. And although the measure of a man's character is anything but an objective exercise, this man's was of such an exceptional nature that, to the casual observer, his entire life appears to be a single extended empirical experiment in virtue.

As a court reporter for decades in Miami, there are those attorneys that we know will act the most professional, be amazing to watch and listen to, and treat everyone in the room with courtesy and kindness no matter the reason for their presence.

I want Janice Gonzalez to know how we all loved working with him and will remember him always for the way he made us feel appreciated. Many treat their peers equally, it is an exceptional person who makes everyone in their presence feel that way.
Our hearts go out to you and promise he will never be forgotten.

It would be an understatement to say that Ervin's passing is a tremendous loss to the legal profession, as well as to all those who were fortunate enough to meet and know him. Although I only knew him professionally, the exemplary way that he practiced law also revealed his high qualities as a person. He will truly be missed, but never forgotten! DAVID L. LEVY, Senior Judge, State of Florida.

I will miss Ervin, my childhood friend who I first met almost fifty years ago. Ervin always had time to exhchange kind words and ask about my everyday life whenever I would run into him. Everyone knows Ervin was beyond brilliant but his most beautiful trait was compassion.

We will miss your bright smile and amazing spirit.

Rest In Peace and may God bless your amazing wife Janice.

Your light will be missed, Ervin. I am at a loss for words to express what a deeply good human being you were; to have know you is to understand it. Prayers and love to you, Janice, family, and friends. You will always be someone my brother, Ian, and I will reflect upon and use as a role model. Your light continues to shine through all of us you positively affected and we it pass along to continue honoring you.

Ervin we will miss you. For many years we have the priviledge of knowing and serving you, your lovely wife Janina and your associates in our restaurant. Always very calm educated and a gentelman. Even the chef knew you were in the dinning room, the way you just to order your food. Rest in peace Ervin. From the family of Caffe Abbracci to the Gonzalez family.

Our son, Calder "Mr. Awesome" Sloan, a little boy's legacy you secured, Ervin.

Ervin, you are a hero, now and forever. Your legacies of justice, paying it forward, and saving lives will last forever, long after all of us flee this earth. The moon over Miami dims with your departure from this place, but your spirit continues to illuminate the universe.

When we think of the quote: "Don't confuse kindness with weakness", we think of you. My family will be forever indebted to you, your firm, and Dan Santaniello for fighting the good fight for all the right reasons. Thanks to your efforts, the Caleb and Calder Sloan Awesome Foundation is already ready making a difference in the lives of children everywhere. We are just a small tribe of the families and people you fought for.

Ervin, You are a gentle warrior. You are a friend. You are a mensch. By now, you and Calder are fast friends. He knows how you honored and cemented his legacy. We love and remember you always, always, always .. to infinity and beyond.

Today's service was incredibly moving. We were all moved by your presence and contributions to the world. Our hearts and prayers go out to your courageous and beautiful human being of a wife Janice, your family, co-workers, and friends. You won't be forgotten, ever. Quite on the contrary, your spirit lives forever.

May the choir of Angels greet [him] and like Lazarus, who once was a poor man, may [he] have eternal rest." I am sure that Monsignor Morras will be there to greet him too. Maria & Benny Diaz

I met Ervin at my dad's barber shop when he and his dad came in for haircuts. We were just kids, 6 or 7, growing up in Grapeland Heights, going to St. Michael's, then Immaculata-La Salle High School.

Over the years he was always a source of smiles, warmth and positive energy, a man of high class and kindness, an inspiration by his example to those around him.

Ervin, you left us far too early, but you left us with many good memories.

Peace, my friend.

The news was incredibly shocking - and still befuddles me. Without a doubt Ervin was the quintessence of lawyer professionalism. Someone else said it best : he was the "lawyer's Lawyer" - the lawyer every lawyer strived to be. Yet, a man of his enormous success , was always so gracious and willing to help me (and so many others). The news of his passing hit the legal community like a tsunami and we will be reeling in this perplexing moment for a while to come. For certain, Ervin will never be forgotten. How can we ? He has given so much of himself. We will each carry some part of him in our hearts and in our practice of law. I know I will. Am praying for his beautiful wife, Janice and their entire family. God Bless.

May our gracious and loving God have mercy on his soul and give him everlasting life. Ervin was one of the really good guys who really cared about people and made everyone feel like they mattered. He is a giant loss to our profession and an even greater loss to his friends and family. I feel a very deep loss even though we rarely crossed paths in the past few years because I know how good a lawyer, volunteer, mentor and person he was. May his family be comforted in knowing that God knows best when to call his children.

I'll never forget the day I met Ervin. He was being deposed as an expert witness on attorneys' fees. He introduced himself to me. I said, "I know who you are. I've seen you in cyberspace on FB and we have many mutual friends." He laughed, of course. He was always such a positive energy to be around. My condolences to his entire family, most of all Janice.

A power of example.I am truly saddened..RIP...

Erv was my friend. He was also my law clerk, colleague and attorney. My student became my teacher. I was so proud of him and his accomplishments. He was always there for me.

I was fortunate to see him in trial on many occasions. His trial skills were legendary. His advocacy turned skeptics into believers and even admirers. His pursuit of justice for his clients was simply inspirational.

His wisdom was beyond his age, and was for the ages. Erv had great judgment.

He was always so happy to see me, and others he cared for. Erv gave me great joy, even under many difficult circumstances. His self-discipline was remarkable. Our runs together were memorable.

When my father died, he reached-out to me with words that made a difference.

Although he was loved by many, Erv was a very private person by nature. I treasured the occasions when he opened-up with me about his views of life, and his experiences.

Erv's love for Janice was manifested in many ways. They were a team. From their meeting, through becoming adults growing-up together, to the accomplishments and challenges they faced together, you could see the love and devotion they had for each other. On the dance floor, they moved as one.

Erv had a huge influence on other great lawyers, including his close friends Ray and Deborah. Teaching with him at UM Law was always a delight. His students appreciated his advice. He had the best feedback ratings of the faculty, by far.

We should grieve about this huge loss of a life that was way too short. Using one of Erv's words, I say we should "gloat" in celebration over the triumph that was his life. And, we should keep his memory alive by emulating his remarkable qualities.

Howard Royce

We are all stunned by Ervin leaving this earth too soon. May God find a way to bring peace to Janice and Ervin's family. I am notedly saddened for all the people Ervin cannot help anymore. He helped everyone - from clients who needed help, to fellow attorneys needing tutorials, to the judiciary who frequently needed guidance. When Ervin spoke, everyone listened - including those who opposed his zealous advocacy of his clients' legal positions. Ervin's mark on all of us is exceptionally noted.

Jacqueline Cobb

My very deepest condolences on the loss of Ervin--truly a legendary prince among men. May you be comforted by your beautiful memories with Ervin. My thoughts and prayers remain with you and may God bless you.
