Esther Weerts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 11, 2004.
Mrs. Edward R. Weerts, 97, died Monday, February 9, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport, Iowa. Celebration of Life Services will be held Friday, February 13, at 10 a.m. at the Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Private family burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.
Esther C. Flesner was born in Golden, Illinois, June 4, 1906, the daughter of George W. and Minnie (Eber) Flesner. She met Edward R. Weerts the first day in second grade and they were life long sweethearts. They were married August 1, 1925, in Blue Island, Illinois. They together graduated from Worsham (Funeral) College in Chicago, Illinois. She was one of the youngest women funeral directors in Illinois. They established family funeral homes in Golden, LaSalle-Peru and Tonica, in Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf, in Iowa. He died in 1971.
Mrs. Weerts was active in many civic, cultural, church and charitable organizations in each community, including the Davenport YWCA, Bettendorf Women's Club, St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, St. Paul Lutheran Church and 4-H. She had been a member of The Outing Club, The Davenport Club and National Selected Morticians, and retained her memberships in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf, a Life-member of St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, and an Honorary-member of the Scott County 4-H. Her quest for knowledge was stimulated by her membership in Questors and that was a real joy for her. She retained her keen mind, her faith, and her dignity, right up to the end.
Memorials may be made to Quad-City Symphony, St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Quad-City Chapter, American Red Cross.
Surviving her are a daughter, Mary Sue Ann Weerts, Stratham, New Hampshire; two sons, E. Robert (Karen) Weerts, Centennial, Colorado, and James F. Weerts, Bettendorf. Also six grandchildren: Richard Weerts, Jody Collentine, Libby Whitmore, Kitty O'Sullivan, Suzanne Weerts and Gina Wand; and eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. (Bert) Dorothy Lewis, Fullerton, California; and a brother, Wilbur Flesner, Golden, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Mrs. (Lewis) Verna Buss, and a daughter-in-law, Sandra Weerts.
Her family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to her caregivers and friends Marie Verbraak and Pete Lehman.
