Ethel Howes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 17, 2011.
HOWES, Ethel
Ethel was born December 1, 1912 on a farm at Glenside, SK to Lizzie and James Gifford, the first of eleven children: Jessie, Ella, Violet, Clare, Bruce, Beryle, Gordon, Vivian, Viola, and Verona Virgina. When Ethel was eight years old, they moved into the village of Glenside. There she finished her High School education, leaving to attend Miller Bible School in Moose Jaw, SK. The Miller Bible School closed in Moose Jaw to be opened in Pambrum, SK so Ethel did not attend. She went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McVety, studying the scriptures under Hugh's teaching. He suggested Ethel go to Teachers' College and become a teacher. This she did, becoming a teacher in 1934. She taught in the Glenside locality until December 1936 when she married Fred Howes and moved to his farm near Hawarden, SK where Evelyn (Albert) Stettner and Elaine (Alan) Dutton were born. They moved to Saskatoon in 1940 where Eleanor (Elmer) Huber was born. In 1942, they moved to Hazel Dell. Ethel taught school there. Esther (Harvey) Koch and Earnest were born in Hazel Dell. In 1949 they moved back to Glenside due to the ill health of Ethel's parents, who died in 1950. After one year teaching at Conquest, SK they moved to the Southey area in 1951. Ethel taught at Hazelwood School, Fosterdale School, and finally the Southey Schools. She taught until her retirement in 1972. Edward (Diane) and Ellen were born when Fred and Ethel lived in Southey. Fred and Ethel moved to Saskatoon in January 1989. Ethel moved to Calgary in 1992. She also lived in various locations near her children until the time of her passing. Ethel was predeceased by her parents, her brothers and sisters except Viola (Peter) Ewert, her daughters Evelyn, Ellen, her son Earnest, and her husband, Fred. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Jacob, and great-grandsons Chad and Wade. She is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by her sister Viola, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great- great-grandchildren and their families. A Funeral Service will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 2670 Radcliffe Drive S.E., Calgary on Thursday, August 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Ethel was a second mother to me from when I met Ed in grade 10 to when I lived with Fred and her in Southey during my teacher internship. Ethel loved to talk and I always enjoyed listening to her. Knowing my friend Ed made it possible for me to know Ethel and for that I am thankful. She will be missed.

Aunt Ethyl was a whirlwind of an aunt but with great depth - a legend. We saw little of her in recent years, but I know that my siblings and I will think of her fondly. Condolences to the family and friends she leaves behind.

Sorry to hear of Ethel's passing. One thing I remember her saying is when treating children treat them all different because they are all different; which makes sense. Jack, Nancy & Jeff Cutting

Aunt Ethel will always be remembered for the person she was, for her sense of right, and most of all understanding.

Sorry to hear of Ethel's passing. She one of many of my first cousins and I think probably the most senior! She lived a great and fulfilling life and was a blessing to many. May her immediate family be encouraged and supported at this time by the Lord's presence. Wonderful to know we will meet again. Paul Phibbs

Our condolences to your families, she is the last of our older generation, and she will be missed. Thankfully she has recorded much of the family history... not everyone has that!
