Ethel Mefford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2014.

Ethel Faith Mefford, 81, passed away lovingly surrounded by her family in the peace of her Las Vegas home on November 13, 2014. A 52 year resident, she is preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Moore; father, Chester Stevens and step-mother, Millie Stevens. Ethel is survived by her husband of 61 years, Rev. Dallas Mefford; daughters Gwen married to Rev. John Ickes, Sharon married to Rev. Steve Stoltzfus and son Mark Mefford married to Heather, all of Las Vegas.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nineteen great-grand children; brother, Tony Thomas of Salt Lake City and sister, April Stevens along with loving nieces and nephews.

Born in Vancouver Washington, Ethel Faith Stevens was married to Dallas Ray Mefford on June 20, 1953 in Bakersfield, California where the couple lived for nine years. Ethel worked as a Western Union telegraph operator before becoming a mother and homemaker extraordinaire. In 1962 her husband answered the call to the ministry, they moved to Las Vegas, and established teh Apostolic Church on Lindell Road.

Ethel graciously and tirelessly embraced her role as a pastor's wife for thirty-four years before her husband retired in 1996. Always an example of true Christian love, her energies encompassed administrator of the Apostolic church of Las Vegas Day Care from 1995 to 2005. While attending CCSN she retained a depth of knowledge in sign language and outreach to the deaf community in Las Vegas.

Her artful, caring, and open hospitality to the ministerial friends across the nation, evangelists, and missionaries made visits to Las Vegas memorable occasions for all who were welcomed into the peace and sanctuary of the Mefford's home.

Ethel loved life, the vast beauty of nature, birds, travel at home and abroad, and camping in the summer time in the majestic Zion National Park with her children and grand-children. She enjoyed going with her husband on hunting trips and horse back riding expeditions. Reading was a passion, especially her Bible. Ethel Mefford was truly a noble and virtuous woman as described in the book of Proverbs. In her tongue was the law of kindness, she looked well to the ways of her household, and her husband and children arise up and call her blessed.

Ethel received her diagnosis of Lewy Body disease in 2012 with the same dauntless approach she used in all of life's exigencies. Her faith never wavering, she bravely battled each phase with dignity and trust in God's promises.

She will be sorely missed by her family, friends and her Apostolic Church family. Arrangements will be conducted by Palm Mortuary and a Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 7:00pm at Apostolic Church of Las Vegas, 1665 Lindel Road.

Internment will be at Palm Memorial Park 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Thursday November 20. 2014 at 2:00pm.

Dear Bro. Mefford and Bro. & Sis. Stoltzfus:

We have just now learned of Sis. Mefford's passing as we were searching for some of your sermons that may be posted on the internet.

It is our honor and privilege to know such a dear and sweet lady. She is the epitome of everything a godly woman should be and an example to every woman who came in contact with her. Her smile was perpetual, we never saw her without it. when Bro. Mefford was at the pulpit she looked upon him with the interest of a new bride, still drawn to her husband after decades together in a world where marriage and family have become so disposable. Would to God that there were more like her in our world today.

We can't wait to see her again "when we get over yonder".

My dear Sis Mefford. Words can't express the emptiness I feel since you've gone "Home". When I first came to church at 12 years old, you were like a mother to me as I practically lived in your home growing up with my dear friend Sis Stoltzfus. You guided me thru my teenage years with your wisdom and spiritual guidance. You comforted me when I lost my dad at 15. You were such a beautiful example of what a wife and mother should be as I entered marriage and motherhood. You were such a wonderful example of a Pastors wife throughout my life, and you passed those beautiful qualities on to your daughters. I will miss you dearly, but my comfort is in knowing that I will see you again one day in Glory. Bro Mefford, my heart and prayers go out to you and the family. Our family loves you all dearly...Love Sis Jan Lareau

Dearest Sister Mefford. How blessed I was to have you as I started my first baby steps on this Apostolic journey forty five years ago. You held my hands and guided me spiritually by example and with words of wisdom and encouragement. You worshipped the Lord in spirit and in truth. Your influence shaped me and I learned so much about how to enjoy life from you. You made everything fun and taught me fresh flowers, candlelight and linen tablecloths are a must for a pretty table. I will cherish all the memories of so many good times as we interacted as extended family and became friends. You were Christian love personified. You and Bro. Mefford were an amazing and beautiful couple. I look forward to heaven and seeing you soon. I love you.

"For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:"
"For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him."
I believe this woman has passed into life, forever more. It isn't important how a person dies, rather how they lived.
I feel blessed to have known her and her family who are missing her most.
My condolences to the family.

Our dear, sweet Sis Mefford. We were privileged enough to be in her life not only as kids growing up in church, but also, now being adults, and being able to say that our children were privileged enough to know her as well. She always made us feel like family. So sweet and gentle a woman. We will never forget her Godly example. Until we meet again dear sister. To Bro Mefford & family: We love you greatly and are praying for you in this difficult time.

What a blessed assurance we have in the hope that we will meet again. Thank you for your patient love, gentle spirit and tireless words of encouragement. You always had hope for me even during those times when I didn't have it for myself, thank you. My life has been richly blessed to have known you. I always viewed it as such an honor to able to work in your home. Words can't express what a privilege it has been to have had you, not only for a pastor's wife, but as my friend. My pockets are overflowing with treasures that I gleaned from you. There is no greater example of how a Godly woman should conduct herself. To become more like you would be a worthy goal accomplished. Although I didn't express it often, there has always been much gratitude and honor in my heart for you. You made it so easy to love and respect you. You are now in the place most desired by those of us still here, in the presence of our Saviour, where we will meet you shortly. I love you Sister Mefford and look forward to seeing you again. Goodbye for now....

Words now simply are inadequate to express how much I love, respect and admire you! Precious memories have flooded my mind over the past few days and scenes of treasured times of you praying me through to the Holy Ghost, hikes in Zion, horseback riding and lectures on how to be a lady! It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and that's exactly what I want to do....! Thank you for sowing into my life! I love you and look forward to seeing you soon on the other side! Dance freely before our Savior, Sis. Mefford! You've fought a good fight and kept the faith.......Surely there is laid up a crown of righteousness in Heaven! Love "Little Kathi"

Sis Mefford was so kind to me as a teenager. I have many times over the years drawn from some wisdom she passed on to me during that time. I so appreciated her...and even though I didn't get to be around her in recent years, I loved knowing she was still there, still faithful, still being Sis Mefford. I will miss knowing she is there. Bro Mefford, you and Sis Mefford inspired me to look for a companion with whom I could have a relationship like yours. I loved watching the two of you together! You will be in my prayers in the coming weeks. Sharon...praying for you my friend. I have been there. You and I were greatly blessed....best two Moms in the world! I think my son hit the nail on the head when he said it is hard to think of Sis. Mefford as not actually being a blood relative. She has always been such a friend, example and mentor for me. When my family couldn't be at my wedding, she stood in for my mother. I was so thankful.
Her soft, kind words and ready laugh were always a balm to my spirit. Knowing how demanding her role as pastor's wife was, I tried to limit how often I called her for advice, but when I did call, she always gave me just the right words to say.
One time my husband got roped into "volunteering" me for an overwhelming week of babysitting a real problem child. I was about to have a panic attack over it, when the mother showed up, prepared to leave three problem children with me, instead of one. For a week. Day and night! There was no way I could even contemplate that task, with my own two children. I excused myself to go to my bedroom, where I frantically called Sis. Mefford and asked what to say to get out of it, even though I had never agreed to do it. She told me there was no way I was to undertake that task. She gave me such calming words of refusal that I was able to disappoint the mother, without crushing her or giving in. As I sat with the mother as she absorbed the refusal, I pictured Sis. Mefford, and tried to sit with a smile and folded hands, like she would, not adding to the consternation of the moment. It all ended well, due to my precious pastor's wife.
I will miss her, as we all will, and will grieve with Bro. Mefford on the loss of his life's love. They were sweethearts to the end!

Sister Mefford, Thank you for being you I know everything that can be said has been about you and what a great lady of faithfulness that you were, but what stands out to me was that no matter who the person was or what they had done you always had a kind word to say about them no matter what, it was one trait that you had that always stood out to me, Thank you for that. Bro Mefford you are in my prayers and thoughts always love you beyond measure I pray for your strength through this time in your life. God bless you and your whole family.

My beautiful Nana... Thank you for all you gave me all through my life... Wisdom, fun, love, laughter, but most of all your example of living for God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. You showed me so so much about this life on earth and helped guide my way at the very beginning of my walk with God. You made sure I got to church and heard the Word and I'm so thankful it got down in my heart at a young age. Spending time with you and Papa are some of my happiest memories.. As a kid and as an adult. You were always there.. And that's why it's so hard to lose you. This world seems a little darker and colder without you in it and I hope the angels know how blessed they are to have a jewel like you. Thank you for loving me so much.. It is one of the most precious things in my life. I never doubted your love and I pray you knew how much I love you. Goodnight for now, and I'll see you in the morning.

It is impossible to quantify the influence that Sis. Mefford has had on my life. I am sure I am speaking for many here when I say that she was family to all of us. One of the more difficult adult realizations of my life was that I was not her biological family. But, she would have never made that distinction.

She has been a huge part of my life from the attached photo, taken when I was 4 day's old. And she will continue to influence the rest of my life. She enriched the lives of all who knew her. My parents, my sister, my wife and my children all are dealing with the loss. But our loss is heaven's gain. I can hear her in my mind commenting on the beauty of heaven. I love and miss you Sis.
