Eugene Maguire Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 8, 2025.
Eugene Maguire, 85, of Moseley, Virginia, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2025. Born on September 1, 1939, in Astoria, New York, he lived a life marked by service, humility, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.

From an early age, he demonstrated a strong sense of duty and commitment. At16 years old, he earned his Eagle Scout badge-an early sign of the values that would guide him throughout his life.

Eugene began his career in civil service with a brief stint in sanitation, and then as an EMT ambulance driver. It was during this time, at age 21, that he met Barbara, an ER nurse at St. John's Hospital in New York. Their meeting sparked a love story that led to marriage and lasted decades until her passing.

In 1961, he joined the New York City Police Department before transitioning to the New York City Fire Department in 1962. He served as a firefighter with courage and distinction until his retirement in 1998.

He was known for his sharp wit and playful spirit. A true prankster with a dry sense of humor, he brought laughter and light to those around him. He was humble about his accomplishments but always made time for others-whether through community service or simply showing up for those he loved.

He was a devoted member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Chesterfield and was honored as a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #13170 and the John McMahon Assembly 2205, 4th Degree. He always looked forward to his Wednesday morning, men's bible study. He found joy in giving back through Caritas, and was a part of the Furniture Assembly and Restoration Team (F.A.R.T.), reflecting both his selflessness and sense of humor.

Above all else, he cherished time with his family and never missed an opportunity to attend his grandchildren's events. He took great pride in organizing annual family vacations that created lasting memories for generations.

Eugene is lovingly remembered by his children: Teresa Essigman (Ken); Cathy Kelley; William Maguire; and John Maguire. He was proud "Pops" to his 10 grandchildren: Dana, Tayler, Paul, Erica, Kristen, Carolyn, Erin, Kevin, Kayden, Brianna; and 3 great-grandchildren to Callen, Briar, and Mason. He is also survived by his brother Jerry.

He now joins his beloved wife Barbara and daughter Jeanne, in eternal rest.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Chesterfield Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home located at 14301 Ashbrook Parkway, Chesterfield, Virginia 23832. A Celebration of Life will begin at 7:00 PM during the visitation.
