My deepest condolences to all family members. I have just learned of Leo's passing and was saddened to learn of his death. Leo and I were classmates together at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center School of Journalism in 1956. He was a good friend and true journalist then also. He finished first in our class at that time. I had lost contact with him until 2013 and for a few months we had remained in touch via email. He was an excellent journalist with a crisp writing style. We were, at that time, both from Massachusetts. A Boston Irishman's sense of humor and a joy to have known during our time as students in "JO" school. Fair winds and following seas, mate.

Leo Coughlin was my mentor and my friend, unfailingly generous with his time and his professional guidance. His was an incisive mind informed by a catholicity of interests from politics and history to philosophy, literature and sports, regularly leavened with humor. I'll always be grateful to him.

To Leo's children and grandchildren, my sympathies for the loss of your father and grandfather. Leo and I enjoyed discussing southern writers whom he had met but I had only read.My very favorite column of all time was the one he wrote about your mother and grandmother. No one can read that article without tears.

iI am deeply saddened to learn of Leo's recent passing. I met him 79 years ago when I was 4 years old and he was 3. We lived on the same street and remained very close friends all these years. I was in his wedding in Baltimore many years ago. Leo was a true newspaper man and a great one all his life. My sincere sympathy and condolences to all his family.

So sorry to Learn of Leo's death! He was a dear friend and classmate of my brother Jack Devlin at Stoneham High School class of 1951! He and Jack develop a legend that my dad caused a fumble in the Thanksgiving football game and that my uncle recovered the ball n scored the winning touchdown! They wrote a column for the Stoneham papers where the legend of the Devlin brothers was developed! Jack and Leo were equipment managers for Tony Deteso's baseball and football teams! Leo was part of many happy hours of the gang that shot baskets, play baseball and etc in our back yard.
In later years Jack visited with Leo on a few business trip he made to Baltimore! Sadly Jack died in 1983. God bless you all and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

He was about the only reporter that could be fully believed! What a fantastic man he was! And oh how we've missed him. Please accept our heartfelt Sympathy for your loss. Perhaps OUR loss is Heaven's gain.
