Family-Placed Obituary

Eugene Keali'i Ka'auwai O Kamehameha Miranda December 5, 1940 - February 29, 2008 A Native-Hawaiian, one of five sons born in Honolulu, in the Territory of Hawaii, to Philomena Keali'i Waine`e Mahelona and Andrew Miranda of Honolulu, Grandson to Elizabeth Emma Pakuai of Honokua, Kona, and Joseph Kueiwa Mahelona of Makawao, Maui, Great-Grandson to Elizabeth Waine`e Kaaukai and Samuel Leone Pakuai Kaawai of Wai`he`e, Maui, and Great-Grandson to Kalai Mahoe Keolulu and William Mahelona of Makawao, Maui. Eugene attended Maryknoll, Kaahumanu, and Central Intermediate Schools, and is an Alumnus of the Class of '58 at Farrington High School in Honolulu, in the Territory of Hawaii. His Brother - Peter Kalani Miranda in 1969, his Father - Andrew Miranda in 1972, his Brother - Norman Kali'iaukai Miranda in 1987, and his Mother - Philomena Keali'i Waine'e Mahelona in 2004, predeceases Eugene. Eugene is survived by his loving Wife - Yvonne K. Miranda, his two beautiful Daughters Lori-Lei Aponte and Noelani Yomes, his Granddaughter -Courtney-Cree Ha'aheo Aponte, his Grandson - Stirling Kulana Aponte, and his Sons-in-Law - David Aponte and David Yomes. Eugene's entire life evolved around his daughters and grandchildren. They were his pride and joy. Since 1959 Eugene (Coach Gene) has devoted many many hours in community outdoors sports programs and community service programs from Hawaii Kai to Kalihi for Keiki, pre-teens, teenagers, young adults, and adults i.e., Canoe Paddling, Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Football, Soccer and Field & Track. One of Eugene's protégées and success story is his daughter, Noe, whom he coached in Hawaii Kai Bobby Sox for many years, who was selected as an All-State Baseball Star at Kamehameha Schools for four consecutive years, and was featured in Sports Illustrated in her senior year at Kamehameha. Being his first born, Lori-Lei was also a protégée and success story of Coach Gene. Here, Lori-Lei, for many years, was fortunate to have the exclusive opportunity to experience and to receive hands-on guidance from her dad, which ultimately resulted in receiving accolades and recognition from her peers, high school coaches and Community Sport Programs for being an Outstanding Female Athlete in Soccer, Softball and Volleyball. Here again we have a prime example of Coach Gene successfully influencing and shaping the outcome and future of a young person, his daughter, Lori-Lei. Without question Coach Gene has had much influence in shaping the future of many young people in this Community. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Coach Gene's dedication and community service demonstrated many times over that he was a true "Servant Leader," who led by example. For the last twelve years, Coach Gene has had the opportunity to coach his Grandchildren Ha'aheo and Kulana in Soccer, Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Football and Field & Track. Without question his grandchildren will do well and continue his legacy in perpetuity. Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth - are principles that Coach Gene practiced every day of his life. This is his legacy - dedicating most of his adulthood teaching children and young adults to do well in any sports program they chose to undertake, to be the best in their endeavors, and to practice good sportsmanship. He enjoyed and loved what he was doing and gave his time freely to all young children and adults who needed help and who wanted to help themselves become better persons as adults and parents The absence of Coach Gene in the Community Sports Programs will be noticeable for many years to come. Eugene is also survived by his Brothers - Stephen Donald Kaweloheali'i Miranda of Colorado Springs and Vernon Harold Mahealani O Kamalamalama Miranda of San Diego; and his Sister - Antoinette Pilialoha Schmidtchen of Los Angeles. MEMORIAL SERVICES TO BE HELD AT BORTHWICK MORTUARY IN HONOLULU FROM 10:00 AM TO 1:00 PM, SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 2008. Updated on 03/19/2008.

Yvonne, Lori-lei, Noe and Ohana: E kala mai we missed Eugene's funeral. I just found out. My deepest condolences. Kalei is away on a trip but I'll let her know. When my dad passed I found comfort in knowing that Jesus died so that we could live forever when our earthly bodies could no longer. Please know our thoughts and prayers will be with you all. Ke Akua Pu. Lowell, Lillian and Ohana.

Gene, husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach...was a man of extraordinary talents. He touched many lives traveling through life's journey. In this time of mourning, find peace in that he is playing with angels and watching over all of you. Now he is being "Papa" to a little Aponte that was taken to heaven too soon...god bless and remember the warmth of his love and kindness.

Gene has lead this team from the inception of the league. We are all older folk (40 plus and don't ask how much plus) and alot of us have never played soccer before joining the team. Through his encouragement and steadfast service we all have become friends because he kept us from taking it too serious.

We are sad to hear of Gene's passing. A loss to not only his family, but to the entire community. A good friend on the soccer field for many years.
