ANDERSON — Eugene (Gene) Wilson Newberry, 94, of Anderson, died Dec. 23, 2009, at Bethany Pointe Health Campus after a long, fulfilling life of touching many souls.

He was born, April 3, 1915, in Garrison, Ky., the second of 10 children born to the late Thomas H. and Irene Sullivan Newberry. The family moved to New Boston, Ohio, where he graduated from Glenwood High School in 1933 as valedictorian of his class.

He did undergraduate work at two Ohio schools, Rio Grande College and then Denison University, where he earned a B.A. in 1937. Graduate studies were done at Anderson College (now University), B.Th., 1938, Oberlin Graduate School of Theology and Stanford University. He earned a Ph.D. from Duke University in Historical Theology in 1950. Honorary doctorates were conferred by Rio Grande, D.D., 1965 and Anderson University, D.D., 2002. He was ordained as a minister in the Church of God in 1937.

He retired in 1980 from Anderson University School of Theology where he was named the first Distinguished Professor of Christian Theology. He taught there for 32 years and was the seminary's third dean, 1962-1974. Upon his retirement, he was honored by being named Professor Emeritus of Christian Theology. He married Agnes Marie Hilligas on Aug. 20, 1938. Before coming to Anderson, Dr. and Mrs. Newberry pastured Church of God congregations in Detroit, Mich., Cleveland, Ohio, San Jose, Calif., and Baltimore, Md. He and his wife started Pathways, an adult Sunday school class at Park Place Church of God, and led it for 40 years, concluding in 1997. They were also active members of a Quest Group for 50 years.

In Anderson, Dr. Newberry served on two of the church's national agencies. He was on the Board of Church Extension and Home Missions and was its president from 1956-1972. He served as member of the Missionary Board from 1981 to 1991 and was president from 1983 to 1988. He and Mrs. Newberry served short-term mission/teaching assignments at Kima Theological Seminary in Kenya, East Africa, in 1972 and again in 1982. He was a 49-year member charter member of Mounds Kiwanis where he served in various offices.

Dr. Newberry contributed to many religious and scholarly publications and authored four books, "Primer for Young Christians," "Responding to God's Call…to Live in Christ," "Soundings," and "A Boy from Lewis County." After retirement, he taught School of Theology extension classes at Warner Southern College in Lake Wales, Fla. and served interim pastorates in Kendall, Fla., Grand Junction and Colorado Springs, Colo., and Phoenix, Ariz., and traveled extensively at home and abroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Agnes, who died April 16, 2009, and six siblings—four who died in infancy—and brothers Charles (Chuck) in 1991 and Jesse in 2009.

Survivors include daughters Kay (husband Don) Schlafer and Jill Dickerson of Anderson, Beth Backus (husband John Moe) of Noblesville, granddaughter Angela Lehr (husband Cameron) Ellison of Fishers, and great-grandson Ike Christian Ellison; sister Lillian Kyser of Kalamazoo, Michigan, brothers Tom of New Boston, Ohio, and Howard of Portsmouth, Ohio; sisters-in-law Maralyce Newberry of Portsmouth, Ohio, Alma Newberry Powell of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., Wilma Matusik of Cadiz, Ohio, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to thank the nurses, aides and staff of Bethany Pointe Health Campus, SouthernCare Hospice, and Dr. Kelly Chambers, NP Deb Garner, and their staff.

The funeral service will be on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at 11a.m., Park Place Church of God with Dr. David Markle, Rev. Carma Wood, and Rev. Phil Bruzzese officiating, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Visitation will take place on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service from 3 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Anderson University School of Theology (Newberry Scholarship Fund) or Park Place Church of God.

Gene & Agnes were special neighbors and comissionaries while we served in Kenya. In their later years they shared about looking forward to their life with the Lord after life on earth. They are finally home.

I love you and will remember you.

May the loving arms of Christ surround and comfort your family.

Love,
Caroline Ackerman

It was my privilege to know Dr. Newberry as Dean and Professor at AU SOT. He and Agnes also were our neighbors for several years. I especially remember the day we had a fire at our home in 1971. I was in San Diego, CA at the time. My wife, Joyce, was at school when the fire started. When she returned home, Dr. Newberry and others were standing around. She told me how comforting his words were as he stood with her and watched the fire consume a part of our home. This is one of our special memories of him. I had gone to visit him on the morning of his death, only to learn that he had passed shortly before I arrived. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family as you mourn his passing. May you be comforted as you remember his significant contributions to the church.

It was always a pleasure to sit in class as Dr. Newberry disclosed the wonderful truth of God's Word. I appreciated him as an instructor and counted him as a friend. May our wonderful Lord give you comfort this day with the promise of a great reunion
day when all God's saints gather around the throne of God.

I remember Dr. Newberry as a wonderful man of God. My years working with him at the School of Theology were years of growing and stretching for me as a result of his encouraging words. I grieve for the family, but I know he is reaping his reward now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Blessings to each of you, his children and grands.

Kay, you have helped so many families over the past years with your well planned dinners after the many funeral services. I am sorry I cannot help you at this time. I hope you remember who I am. Did you know your dad and my son often talked at Bethany Pointe? Son Joe is a nurse there and he looked forward to Mr. Newberry's walks to his nursing station for their talks. He thought he was a very kind and pleasant man. My deepest sympathy to you and your sister and family.

I was a student at the School of Theology from 1963-1971 while earning two graduate degrees during the time Dr. Newberry was Dean. I had several classes from him. I found him to be a person who thought "outside the box" with fresh insights and words of encouragement. Through my more than 40 years of ministry, I always found Dr. Newberry to be an encourager and a very dear brother in the Lord and in ministry. He will always be highly esteemed in my heart and memory. God bless and comfort the members of his beloved family. Lloyd Bowen

Whenever Norma and I came home from our missionary service in Japan we would attend Gene's Sunday School class and enjoy it thoroughly. We would also get a chance to attend the quest group of which he was a part. We loved him as a person and as a teacher.....Arthur Eikamp

I am truly sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Newberry. I did not know him but from all I've heard he was a remarkable man, as was your mother a remarkable woman and teacher. She was my teacher at Forest Hills Elementary. Please except my condolences. I will keep you in my prayers and ask God to ease your pain and sorrow. God bless you.

Jill,

I am so sorry for the loss of your father though I am sure he's at peace now with the Lord. I saw you recently at Bethany Pointe while there visiting my mother and sister. Your father seemed like a very dear man. It was great to see you again, however, Jill after all this time out of high school.

This expression of condolence is especially for Beth. I had Beth in 4th grade at Park Place Elementary School. Your father took the time to make a call to the Funeral Home when my mother passed away. He came as a parent to make that call. I have always remembered this condolence, and have always tried follow your father's example when students and faculty have had deaths or hardship in their lives. I would come to the funeral home to call but health gets in the way.
