Eugene Sample Obituary
After graduating from Belzoni High School, Belzoni, Miss., in 1947, Mr. Sample earned a B.S. degree from Mississippi College in 1951.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Europe during the Korean War. He joined TVA in 1953 as a laboratory assistant, making his home in Tuscumbia, Ala. He served in several capacities while at TVA, including soil scientist, project leader and chief of the soils and fertilization research branch. He retired in 1993 as manager of the Division of Research, TVA, Wilson Dam, Muscle Shoals Ala.
Mr. Sample earned both his M.S. degree and his Ph.D. degree in soil science at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Tuscumbia, Ala., where he became treasurer in 1995. He also had been administrative board chairman, Sunday school superintendent and a faithful choir member.
He also served as past president of the Tuscumbia City School Board, as well as a member and past president of the Tuscumbia Kiwanis Club.
Dr. Sample is survived by his wife, Myna Bain Sample; his daughter, Allison Sample, of New York, N.Y.; his son, Dr. Lew Sample; his daughter-in-law, Mandy Newman Sample; three grandchildren, Marilyn, Carter and Saxon Sample, all of Decatur, Ala.; and his sister, Marion Sample Allen, of Belzoni, Miss.; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Tuscumbia, with Mike Pope and David Dale officiating. Burial will be in Tuscumbia Oakwood Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Tuscumbia, the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, is directing.

Gene was a great friend and a great scientist. I had the pleasure of being on some committees with him. I also enjoyed playing some golf with him. These reflections bring fond memories. We send our condolensces.

Hi Lew,
