Eugene “Dutch� Schmidt, 86 of Tampa passed away on October 8, 2010. Dutch was born in Negley, Ohio where he excelled in sports and was scouted by Honus Wagner,�The Flying Dutchman� from whom he got the nickname, “Dutch�. During World War II, he served with distinction in the US Navy. Upon his return, he attended Ohio State University where he earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees and he completed his doctoral studies at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a teacher, coach and high school principal with the Mayfield, Ohio city schools for 30 years. In 1977, he relocated to St. Petersburg where he was a realtor-broker with TamBay and Hofacker and Associates realties. Dutch was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Detwiler Schmidt, his parents, Frank “Hap� Schmidt and Susan Faulk Schmidt and his brother Frank Schmidt. Survivors include his wife Marcia Barton Schmidt and his four children, Steven (Debbie) Schmidt of Boca Raton, Fl., Brad (Maribeth) Schmidt of Coconut Creek, Fl., Jane (Tom) DeGroot of Oviedo, Fl., and Michael (Laura) Schmidt of Atlanta, Ga; eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter, his sister Glenna (Edward) Dagarin of Orange City, Fl., and his brother Clifford Schmidt of East Palestine, Oh. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 10 from 5 to 6 PM with the funeral service at 6 PM at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 6802 Silvermill Drive, Tampa, 33635. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dutch’s memory to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, www.themmrf.org or All Children’s Hospital, www.allkids.org.
