Eugenia Papadakis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2025.
Eugenia Maria "Gina" Papadakis, beloved wife, mother, teacher, and friend, passed away on August 8, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on November 28, 1944, Gina lived a life defined by compassion, kindness, and an unshakable instinct to care for others. Though Alzheimer's gradually took many things from her, it never diminished her innate ability to nurture and advocate for those in need-whether human or animal.

Gina was known far and wide for her love of animals. She welcomed stray and injured creatures of all kinds into her care-not only cats and dogs, but also birds, turtles, and even the occasional racoon. During her children's younger years, she became the person neighbors called when a pet was sick or an injured animal was found. She always found a way to help.

Gina also carried that same spirit of care into her career. As a dedicated special education teacher, she worked with students who faced severe behavioral challenges-students that many had already given up on. In Gina's classroom, they were met with patience, respect, and encouragement, and under her guidance they flourished. Teaching was not just her profession but her calling, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to her students' growth and success.

Even in the later stages of Alzheimer's, Gina's heart continued to shine through. She could always sense when someone needed comfort, a gentle word, or an advocate, and she instinctively stepped in to provide it. Her warmth and empathy were gifts she never lost.

Gina leaves behind a profound legacy of love and kindness. She is survived by her devoted husband, John, and their daughters, Thalia, Despina, and Georgia, who will carry her memory forward with deep pride and affection.

Gina's life was a testament to the power of compassion. She left an indelible mark on all who were blessed to know her-family, friends, students, and the many creatures who found shelter in her care. Her memory will continue to inspire acts of love, kindness, and advocacy in the lives of those she touched.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 24 at 2:00pm at Legacy House of Mesa. To accommodate those who cannot attend in person, the service will also be livestreamed via Zoom at the link below. (Passcode: Gina)

I met Gina and her family in 1983 when I moved upstairs from their store/home. The girls were small and sweet. Gina and John took me under their wings and treated me like family with kindness and joy. We shared the better part of 3.5 years together. My fondest memory is Gina taking all the leftovers of bread, meats and veges, even from me, and putting it all in a huge pot and cooking it up. She only did this in winter when all the local Greek kitties had no access to tourists sharing their food in the tavernas. We'd go out back behind the apartment buildings. Gina had a big wooden spoon she'd bang on the side of the pot. The grasses would start moving, and here would come all the cats. She'd dole out the food onto the ground in big spoonfuls. She alone kept the vast majority of the feral cats alive through the rather brutally cold winters. Gina is up in Heaven feeding all the local cats right now! I will miss my friend very much!

Gina was one of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I loved taking walks with her; she would often stop suddenly to point out a tree or a particular plant. She loved nature, animals, and all kinds of crawling insects. Best of all, she always saw the beauty in those around her.
