Eva VON GENCSY Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on Apr. 13, 2013.
VON GENCSY, Eva
In Montreal on Thursday, April 11, 2013, Eva von Gencsy went to heaven to dance with angels. She was born in Hungary and was trained in classical ballet by a Russian master. After leaving Hungary in 1944, she danced with many European companies. She arrived in Winnipeg in 1948 where she joined The Winnipeg Ballet (today The Royal Winnipeg Ballet) as Prima Ballerina. From 1953 to 1957, Eva was Les Ballets Chiriaeff's Prima Ballerina (today Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal). She was the star dancer of Canadian television until 1970. In 1972, she co-founded Les Ballets-Jazz de Montréal creating a new style of dance: ballet- jazz which became very popular among thousands of followers. Over the years she was given the Order of Canada and received many honours of recognition for her extraordinary work. She has taught, choreographed and influenced the dance world with her style. Loved by all, she lived a full, enchanted and "beautiful" life. She leaves to mourn her niece Valeria, her nephews, many close friends: Csilla, Sylvie, Olivier, Jean-Yves, Janos, Sherill, Ewa and many others, as well as the Canadian and international dance communities. We would like to thank the personnel of the cardiac care unit of the Hôtel Dieu hospital and especially Dr. Pierre Laramée for their exceptional care and love. It was greatly appreciated. A celebration of Eva's life will be held on May 10, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. at L'École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec, 4816 rue Rivard in Montreal. Donations to L'École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec and/or the Cardiac Care Unit of the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital would be greatly appreciated. Condolences may be received at www.kanefetterly.com

Eva was my Friend, Friend in a deepest and the most beautiful sense of this word. I have met Eva only 5 years ago, but it seemed like we have always known each other. There was never a dull moment when we were together…we told each other stories, we talked about Art, Science and of course about Dance. We ate together small meals, that we prepared in her little apartment and drunk wine to Life, to Love, to Dance. We made weekend trips outside of Montreal to see the “World”, we were going together to dance performances and discussed our impressions afterwards, we even exchanged cloth and of course we danced! I am so grateful that I had the chance to know Eva. She will always be with me; she will always be very close to my heart.
Thank you Eva for sharing with me so many beautiful moments.
I will always love you with all my heart
Your friend forever
Ewa

Wonderful Eva will always be fondly remembered from the years she spent spent
with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company.
She was always gracious and giving of
her time and talent to those of us in
the corps de ballet.

Eva, I cherish those many phone calls we exchanged in the last few years. You were so interested in my progress with my cello lessons, what I played at recitals, and what I played with the special needs adults at our concerts. I remember with fondness your visits to my parents when I was young and attending the first performance of Jazz Ballet du Montreal in Vancouver. My father, Steven (Istvan) often asked about you and many times related his time with you in Winnepeg in 1953. You have touched so many with your dance around the world!

Thank you for the absolute joy that you radiated in each and every class Eva is an international treasure, a gem. I am so blessed to have known Eva, a true teacher of passion dance and life! "Good morning class! it is a beautiful day! let's dance!!" That phrase, that joy, that pure love of dance will live with me forever!

Many of us in the RWB Alumni Association either danced with Eva in the Company or studied with her in Banff. Endless energy and enthusiasm were two of Eva's gifts. Eva was diligent in maintaining her membership in the RWB Alumni Association and it was wonderful to see her at our 70th reunion. Dance on Eva.

Thank you, my dearest Eva, for all the many 'beautiful moments' we shared, as great friends, during my years in Montreal, (l977 - l983) and for all the years since, that we have kept in touch and seen eachother. I know I shall never again meet such an inspirational and talented person, that I have been privileged to call my friend. 'Unforgettable, that's what you are', and you'll always be in my heart.

Merci Eva de m'avoir encouragée à commencer des cours de ballet à un âge avancé. C'est grâce à toi si à cinquante ans je réalise un rêve de jeunesse que je ne croyais plus possible.
