Evelyn Doughty Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2015.
Services for Evelyn Young Walker Doughty, 90, of Tyler, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Lloyd James Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Benjamin West and Rev. Brian Hawkins officiating. Burial is in Bullard Cemetery under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home.

Evelyn passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2015, after a short battle with cancer. She was a long-time resident of Tyler and a member of Fairwood United Methodist Church. Evelyn was born on a cold, sunny day January 17, 1925, in Gainesville to the late William L. and Florence Sapp Young. She attended school in Marysville and graduated from Gainesville High School in 1941. In 1942 she graduated from Tyler Commercial College. She worked various jobs during the war, but from 1945-1948 she worked for the American Red Cross. She then went to work for a Tyler attorney, L. L. James as a legal secretary where she was employed until 1958. Next she was hired by the U. S. Attorney's Office. Then she continued to work for the U. S. court system in several positions until she retired in 1987 as secretary to U.S. District Judge William M. Steger. She was very proud of her career and enjoyed her work. After retiring, she often worked at her church, helping out.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 40 years, Jess S. Walker; brothers, Chester, Eursel, Paul, Wayne, Raymond Young; and an infant boy unnamed.

She is survived by her husband of 7 years, William "Leo" Doughty, and Leo's 3 children; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her nieces, Nita Gwaltney, Mary Ann Ashley, Ruth Ann Thigpen and Ingrid Young; nephews, Virgil Young, Don Young, Dr. Glenn Young; and many great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Evelyn was a wonderful and loving person who enjoyed her family and life to its fullest and she will be missed by all.

Pallbearers are Don Young, Jim Butts, Larry Grant, James Thigpen, Mike Welch and Bobby Young.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Wednesday at Lloyd James.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairwood United Methodist Church Mission Fund, 1712 Old Omen Road, Tyler, 75701.
