Family-Placed Death Notice

Evelyn Mae Rivers, 91, passed away October 7, 2006. Miss Rivers was well known for her gentle and compassionate manner, careful and methodical decision making and the ability to choose the right words for each occasion. Miss Rivers was a live long Atlanta resident and graduated from Girls High School in 1935. Miss Rivers spent her career at Sears and Roebuck where she was in Customer Service. A close friend, Kathleen Clayton, said of Evelyn, "She was a very good listener, skilled at her job and well respected at Sears," Miss Rivers attended each annual West End Sears reunion luncheon and in 2004 and in failing health, she insisted on attending. Her entrance was greeted with a stand ovation. Once retired Miss Rivers served as a faithful volunteer with DASS, Downtown Atlanta Senior Service, now known as Center for Positive Aging. Her 20 year devotion to this organization reflected the same dedication she demonstrated to her elderly cousins and family friends as she managed their care with devotion. She was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the Atlanta Braves game was the only event that could tear her away from the Saturday performances of opera on National Public Radio. A transistor radio calling the plays with the TV turned to mute was her favorite way to spend her time. As an avid fan, she knew most of the players by sight and had a Braves jersey with "RIVERS" on the back and Chipper Jones number 10 always out for good luck. A member of St. Marks United Methodist Church for many years, Miss Rivers was a member of First United Methodist Church when she died. She was also very closely affiliated with St. Luke's Episcopal Church where her sister, Margaret Rivers, co-founded the soup kitchen. Miss Rivers' memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, October 12, at 2pm at the Widener Chapel at Campbellstone-Buckhead located at 2911 S. Pharr Court, NW. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations made to Center for Positive Aging, 607 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30308. Survivors include nephews, Tommy Rivers of Atlanta and John Rivers of Eatonton. She was preceded in death by Margaret Rivers, Sarah Grennor and Thomas A. Rivers, Sr., Evelyn's loving siblings. R.T. Patterson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Lilburn, (770) 923-2940.

A church friend and neighbor, Evelyn was a source of help and joy to me. Once when I wanted a place to spend the night, her sofa welcomed me. Her apartment held wonderful plants, books and family pictures. When we realized we had a common friend/relative, Laura Margaret Winter, we went together to her funeral in Marietta. Sometimes we enjoyed laughs and rides to see the fall leaves or just to get a frozen yogurt! Her love of St. Mark church made her a valued volunteer staff member faithfully recording and writing notes to memorial contributors. In her modest, quiet way she gave more to friendships than she received. We shared a love of cats -- and, with her sister Margaret, meals at Mary Mac's!! She was an interesting person, with a beautiful spirit, who will be remembered and missed.
