F. Scott Wells Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2025.
Forrest Scott Wells, known to family and friends as Scott and to some as "Doc" for his time as a Navy corpsman serving with the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam, passed away unexpectedly at the family summer home in Moultonborough, NH, a place he cherished.

Born in Exeter, NH, to Ralph D. and Gertrude S. Wells, Scott is survived by his children-Jennifer Wells, Matthew Wells, and Caroline Wells-his brother Jeff Wells, and five grandchildren: Joaquim Cabedo Wells, Ona Cabedo Wells, Isaac Wells, Isabelle Wells, and EV Sprance. He also counted Barbara and Ronnie Pugh and their family among his nearest and dearest, his Virginia family.

Scott's life was defined by service, curiosity, and a deep love of the natural world. After serving as a Navy corpsman in Vietnam, a period which profoundly shaped his life, he earned a degree in Forestry Science from the University of New Hampshire. His long career with the U.S. Forest Service included roles from Ridgerunner in New Hampshire's White Mountains to law enforcement trainer at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. He pioneered a method of tree fingerprinting to protect forests from lumber poaching. In retirement, he continued to share his knowledge as a substitute teacher in Highland County Schools, serving as an advisor to the FFA program and mentoring students.

Scott's passions extended beyond his work. An avid woodsman and hunter, he also loved motorcycles and could often be found leaning into the curves of Highland County's mountain roads. He channelled his love of fire into many constructive forms-from fighting forest fires, volunteering with the fire department, and teaching controlled burns, to orchestrating vibrant fireworks displays. His church, Word of Faith, and community were central to his life, and he offered his time and energy wherever needed. The Highland County Historical Society and the Highland County Volunteer Rescue Squad were among the organizations that benefited from his enthusiasm and hours of service.

Scott's warmth, humor, and love for his family, friends, and the natural world left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Memorial services will be held at the family summer home in Moultonborough, NH on Sunday, August 17th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Highland County Historical Society or Scott's church, Word of Faith.
