FAITH STENNING Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2014.
STENNING FAITH
Age 89, of Pittsburgh, died on October 15, 2014. Faith was known as a musician, activist, volunteer, and lover of the arts and culture. She was gregarious, outspoken, inquisitive, headstrong, altruistic, and charismatic. Her energy and activities seemed to have no limits, and during the final weeks of her life she maintained an active social schedule, participated in community organizations including the Greater Pittsburgh Coalition Against Violence, and rehearsed with the folk orchestra at the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh, where she was a dedicated member for over 40 years. In her "spare time" she was learning to play guitar. In the 1960s Faith marched for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. Following the death of her husband, Alan, in 1974, she earned a MA in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She then studied the Celtic harp and began a career as a soloist playing Irish folk music. For many years she taught voice, piano, and harp, both privately and as a faculty member at Point Park College. More recently, she sang protest songs with the Raging Grannies, ushered regularly at the Pittsburgh Public Theater, and attended countless music and theatrical performances on a weekly basis. Faith is survived by her older sister, Elaine; and two sons, Ian and Blake. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh, 605 Morewood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested a contribution be made to the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh's Social Justice Endowment.

Faith was both a wonderful teacher and friend. It was such a terrible shock to hear that she's gone and I wouldn't be getting those humorous phone calls anymore. I wasn't able to continue my harp lessons and no longer got to see her as often, but with her indomitable spirit it seemed as though she would always be there. She certainly loved her sons and I'm so sorry for their loss. She will be missed. Debbie Peppler

Faith was a wonderful friend and neighbor for many years. So glad that we got to have her join our family gathering at Gullifty's a few years ago. Blake and Ian, you have our sincere condolences.

Faith was my harp teacher, mentor and friend for 30 yrs. I was proud to present her with the 1st Faith Stenning Legacy Celtic Harp award at an 80th birthday tea party the Harp Grove of Western PA gave her; it has had outstanding recipients since. I'll be writing articles about her for Scottish Harp of America Society's *Kilt & Harp* journal and the International Society of Folk Harpers & Craftsmen's *The Folk Harp Journal*; Bill Van Patten is writing one for the American Harp Society's *The Harp Column*, for the pedal harpists. I'll email Blake copies. My duo, ClarSeannachie, will be playing at the service and reception; Linda McNair and I are both former students, as well as members of the Harp Grove of Western PA Celtic harp ensemble; Faith was one of the founders and its musical director. Her impact on the Celtic harp world was farther-reaching than she ever realized! how we will miss her!

Faith was a much loved neighbor of ours. I remember how grateful was when one of my boys came home from school sick and she took care of him while I was stuck in traffic trying to get home. Katie Wooldridge

We were neighbors of Faith on Windsor street. She was such a sweet person, and an interesting person to talk to. She will be missed.

Faith was an integral part of the Court community. I came to enjoy her most recently as a Raging Granny. My sincerest sympathies, Blake.

Faith was our treasured "across the street" neighbor for many years. She brought joy and laughter to all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She will be missed by many. We are sorry for her loss.

I am so sorry to learn that Faith has died. I saw her at church recently and she seemed as feisty as ever, although frailer. I got to know Faith over the last few years through our mutual involvement in the Matters of Racial Equality Group at First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh. She was a role model for aging with dignity while remaining the same passionate, fiercely intelligent person she always was. I will miss her and regret that I will not be able to attend her memorial service as I will be out of town. My deepest condolences to Faith's family - may you be sustained in your grief by loving memories.
