Father Charles Davignon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2022.

Father Charles P. Davignon, 91, passed away on September 7, 2022, in Derby Line, VT. He was born on November 5, 1930, one of Leo and Nellie Mae (Pudvah) Davignon’s 9 children, in Albany, VT.

When he was still very young and living on the family farm in Brownington he went to school there and completed high school in Bloomfield, CT, and then went to two years of college. Then came two years of Philosophy studies at the Seminaire de Philosophie in Montreal, Quebec and four years of theological studies at the Grand Seminaire de Montreal. Bishop Edward F. Ryan, fifth bishop of Burlington ordained Father Davignon in 1956 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington. He celebrated his first Mass at St. Theresa’s Church in Orleans. Since his ordination, Father has served as parish priest, a Catholic high school principal, a Mary Knoll Mission Associate in South America, a communications director for the Diocese, Chaplain to the Sisters of Mercy and a director of justice and peace. He earned a Masters Degree and doctorate in education from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. Fluent in Spanish and French, Father taught English as a second language and was director of a Catholic radio and television station in the Altiplano of the Andres, 12,500 feet above sea level. Father Davignon served under six different Bishops in Vermont and has said Mass in all of the area Catholic Churches at one time or another including being priest in residence at Michaud Manor for several years after his retirement.

He enjoyed traveling, visits back to the farm, was an avid reader, going to the family cottages on Seymour and Lake Parker and getting together with priest friends for lunch or dinner.

Father Davignon is survived by his brothers Francis, Ernest and his wife Cecile, sisters Elizabeth Denning, Lorita Hogan, Anita Cook, and Kathleen Duffy, also 22 nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews and his very good friend retired Bishop John Leibrecht of Springfield, MO.

He was predeceased by his brothers Raymond and Ralph.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday September 13, 2022, at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Derby Line where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Bishop Christopher Coyne officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at 11:00 A.M. Internment will be held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Barton alongside many members of his family at the convenience of his relatives who survive him. Online condolences may be made at curtis-britch.com. I worked with Charlie at Camp Holy Cross on Lake Champlain in the 1950s. There are certain people in life who we are fortunate to have known and Charlie leads that list of mine. I was fortunate to have kept in touch with him over the years .
Thank you Father Charlie Davignon. Bill Palmer

Father Davignon married my husband and I in So. Burlington in 1992. He was wonderful, thoughtful, and as my husband was one of nine children, was very proud to come from such a large family himself. Father, enjoy your next journey, you have worked hard and save many souls.

"Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories."
We always heard Fr Charles' uncle Edward Pudvah tell us the story of bringing his nephew on the lumber truck to Connecticut for school. Handed him a little money and lots of advice on leaving the farm. Sending our thoughts & prayers and thinking of all the beautiful memories.
In sympathy, Laurice & Dorothy Pudvah and family

I first met Fr. Charlie when I was a Maryknoll Seminarian in the 70's. He was such a good priest and friend. I last visited him in his home in Vermont 2 years ago and I'm so grateful to have spent time with him. Rest in peace Fr. Charlie.

I met Fr. Charlie when he was a guest at our comparative religions class at So. Burlington High School years ago, and liked him immediately. I could see he was a kind man and had a lively sense of humor, and genuinely liked people. I saw him on and off over the years, and we had a couple mutual friends, so I would hear news of him regularly. Praying for Fr. Charlie's loved ones and friends as you all adjust to life without him.

Prayerful condolences to the Davignon family on the sad news of Father Charlie's 'going home to God'. The highlight of our over 50 year friendship was the trip we made together around the world in September 1975 via Alaska, Hong Kong, in Calcutta with Saint Mother Teresa, then on to Delhi, Moscow, Warsaw, celebrating Mass at the tomb of Saint Hyacinthe in Krakow, and then visiting my dear Aunt Elisabeth Curtin in Salzburg, Austria. In later years, I much enjoyed visiting Charlie at the family farm in Brownington, and in many Vermont parishes where he always had the 'Maryknoll North' banner on the wall. It was only a few weeks ago that Charlie and I reflected in a telephone call on how the Lord had blessed our lives! May his noble soul rest in peace!

Fr. Charlie was a dear friend for many, many years. We worked together in Puno, Peru and again at Maryknoll, NY. I spent many a pleasant day visiting Charlie in Vermont. He kept me laughing even in the darkest of times.
I will offer a mass for him and will keep Charlie and all of the Davignon family in my prayers.
