Faye Kilpatrick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 26 to Jan. 27, 2018.

Faye Hines Kilpatrick, 90, of Crozier, Virginia and long-time resident of Litchfield, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home among loved ones, her treasured Maltese Leo lying at her side, on January 23, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Robert D. Kilpatrick; her parents, Ellwood Raeford Hines and Clarissa Jane Carter Lewis Hines of Richmond; and by two sisters, Margaret Patton (Sam) of Birmingham, Ala., and Mary Louise Tate of Norfolk, Va. She leaves behind five children, Robert (Patrick) D. Kilpatrick, Jr (Heidi) of Los Angeles Calif., Kathleen S. Kilpatrick of Crozier, Va, Lauren D. Kilpatrick (Richard Petrovits) of Cromwell, Ct., Tracy C. Kilpatrick of Palmyra, Va. and T. David Kilpatrick (Korri) of Fargo, N.D.; 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; and her brother, Edwin Hines of Chesterfield. A life-long student, athlete and teacher, Mrs. Kilpatrick was a graduate of John Marshall High School and Westhampton College, University of Richmond. She earned two Masters degrees in education and psychology from the University of Hartford and Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., respectively, moving from the classroom and playing fields as a beloved teacher and coach to guidance counseling and family counseling in the later years of her long career in both Virginia and Connecticut. With their move to Connecticut in 1957 in support of Mr. Kilpatrick's work with the Connecticut General Insurance Company, Mrs. Kilpatrick's Southern charm, energy, and wit contributed greatly to her husband's rise to head the company and later CIGNA Corporation, and to his success in those positions. A fierce tennis player and avid horsewomen, Mrs. Kilpatrick was a member the Country Club of Virginia where she played tennis until the age of 85, and of the Litchfield County (Conn.) Hounds and Deep Run Hunt Club in Goochland, Va. She continued to shoot and foxhunt well into her 80's and to enjoy trail riding until just the year before her passing. She was committed to preserving land, historic places, and history, and contributed to many nonprofit and educational organizations, including: the Virginia Historical Society and Montpelier; the universities of Virginia and Richmond; St. Christopher's School and St. Andrew's School, both in Richmond; and recently to Sweet Briar College, whose unique roll in fostering and honing the leadership skills of women she long promoted during her many years as a counselor of high school students, and recently as a donor. Mrs. Kilpatrick gave as well of her time and talents in support of her values: she was active, often as a leader, in a number of civic and political organizations, including, among others: the Chapel Guild of Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond; the Board of the Tandem Friends School; the Board the University of Virginia School of Continuing Education; a member of the Monticello Cabinet; a docent at Wilton House in Richmond and as a volunteer at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. An avocational genealogist, Mrs. Kilpatrick was a member of: the Jamestowne Society; the Colonial Dames of America; the National Society of Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was as well the founder and a long-time member of the Republican Women's Club of Goochland County. The family wishes to thank her long-time helper, Angela Payne, and the careful caregivers at Paradise Home Care and Intrepid Hospice who smoothed the last months of Mrs. Kilpatrick's passage. The service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday January 27, 2018, in Cannon Memorial Chapel, University of Richmond, with reception to follow immediately in the atrium of the nearby Gottwald Science Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Kilpatrick's memory to the University of Richmond, Robert D. Kilpatrick Scholarship Fund.

We here at UVA Lifetime Learning are just now hearing of Faye's passing. We all enjoyed her during the Summer Jefferson Symposiums in Charlottesville. She shared her love of Jefferson and her laughter with us. Much love to the family and friends and her little white dog.

I admire the entire Kilpatrick family. As a child growing up in Bakersville, and being friends with Kathy, I spent quite a bit of time at your home. I was always welcomed with open arms and I have many great memories of your Mom and Dad. My condolences to you all.

Faye was an amazingly strong and spirited woman, who always let you know where you stood in her mind! She taught me a lesson or two on the occasions we were foxhunting or trail riding with Depp Run Hunt Club. She was a great frined and supporter of DRHC and will be deeply missed. Susan and I send our sincere condolences to Faye's children and grandchildren at this time of sorrow.
