Fernando VILLARREAL Obituary

Published by Dayton Daily News on Jul. 20, 2018.
VILLARREAL, Fernando Fernando Antonio Villarreal - affectionately called Osito or Little Bear by his mother- was born on September 22, 1947, in Mexico City, Mexico. His father's architectural work designing hospitals for the World Health Organization motivated young Bear's family's move to the Washington, D.C. area where he spent his childhood. Brimming with an abundance of potential and intelligence, Fernando found his calling and went on to earn a medical degree from The George Washington University where, in the most important moment of his life, Fernando also met his soulmate, Suzanne Rausch. The inseparable couple married on June 5, 1970, and moved to the Dayton area to begin their family and start his Family Medicine Practice that they both worked tirelessly to support for decades. Married for 48 years, Sue and Bear were teammates in all things. Together, they proudly supported a family of six including Christopher Villarreal, David Villarreal, Rachel Keyes (spouse Tom Keyes), Jordan Villarreal, Aaron Villarreal (spouse Kathleen Williamson), and Cameron Villarreal (significant other Taylor Ryerse). They enjoyed gardening, antiquing, and supporting their community and extended family. A caring and devoted father, Papa Bear instilled in his children not only his sense of compassion, strong work ethic, and spirit of generosity but also his love of nature, art, and music; especially the Beatles. He was a kind ear to his patients and an irrepressible community contributor. Recognizable at a glance by hair as distinctive as his smile, Doc V. used his talents in sports medicine to support student athletes (including his three grandchildren William, Samuel, and Thomas Keyes) at both Oakwood and Archbishop Alter High Schools. Our beloved Fernando, who enriched the lives of so many with his kind heart and gentle nature, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at the age of 70. For those who are able to attend, there will be a remembrance gathering at Fifth Street Brew Pub on Friday, July 20th, 2018, from 10:30am to 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Willits Family/Seton Scholarship Fund in memory of Fernando A. Villarreal. Checks are payable to Archbishop Alter High School, attn: Advancement Office, 940 David Road, Kettering, Ohio 45429.

Sue and Family -

Many, many years ago Fernando encouraged and supported my greatest desire - to become a physician. To that end he endorsed my application to his alma mater (GWU School of Medicine), where I eventually graduated with my MD. I recall him as a lovely, friendly man. Although our paths would never cross again I have always been very grateful for Fernando's support and encouragement. I'm sorry for your family's loss and wish all well. I hope the many writings of appreciation and love are of comfort.

Dear Sue,
I was in shock! What a kind and sincere soul he was. He always had a joke for us ladies in medical records. I loved his sense of humor. He is missed already. Hugs to you and your family.
Lovingly,

Dr. Villarreal took care of our family over the last 20+ years. It was always a genuine pleasure to visit him for our appointments and listen to him share his wisdom and wit on various topics. It was also lovely to witness the strong partnership between him and Sue. He was one in a million and we will miss him greatly.

Sue, I was so shocked to just recently hear of Dr V's passing. Words cannot express how sad and how sorry I am. I began going to see him 35 years ago when I observed how kind and caring he was to his patients at the hospital. I was very thankful he continued to care for his hospitalized patients as long as he did. When my daughter, Martha, was too old for the pediatrician, he became her doctor too. I will so miss seeing you both. My prayers are for you and your family. God bless you.

Dear Sue and Family,

We are so saddened by the passing of Dr. V. He was a caring doctor who always made us feel welcome and cared for. I remember coming to Ohio in 1988 and becoming his patient, if it wasn't for his wisdom and treatment, I would not be here today. He was truly a magnificent doctor and kind soul.

We are heartbroken to hear of your loss and hope the good memories will, in time, help ease your grief.

Sue & family, Deepest sympathies to you on your loss. Dr V was a great man. I was very upset when my insurance carrier changed and I had to leave his practice. He was a very enlightening doctor and I enjoyed his stories that he would share on every visit to his office. He made a very deep imprint on the lives of many I am sure.

Dr. V was THE BEST ! I met him in 1978 as a very sick young alcoholic .
I was only 23 but yet I had lost 80 percent of my liver and had pancreatitis. He was very compassionate, kind, and yet direct.
His knowledge and encouragement are part of the reason I am sober
Today ! I am now 63 and 40 years sober, When I celebrate this milestone on July 23rd , Dr V will certainly be in my heart ❤

So sorry to read of Dr. Villarreal's passing. He provided great care, and I always got a bonus interesting conversation on high school sports, politics, medical advances, etc. He will be greatly missed, no doubt...

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Dr. V was an excellent doctor who, for the past 30+ years, cared well for my parents and always took time to explain things and talk with them and me. We were all shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. Indeed, he was a kind soul and will be missed.
