Flora Hopkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 30, 2018.
Long-time Hartford resident Flora Leuella (Jacques) Hopkins no longer graces our presence. Flora was born November 16, 1920 in Attleboro, Massachusetts; grew up in Rhode Island during the depression; and moved with her family to Hartford for factory work during World War II. She married James Patrick Hopkins in 1950 and leaves behind Lois M. Nitch, Daniel J. Hopkins, Flora A. DeMaio; grandchildren Andrew Puglisi, Nancy Rolfe, Roseanne DeMaio, and Anthony DeMaio; and great-grandsons James, Benjamin, and William Rolfe. Among her jobs Flora, who was self-taught, supervised tellers at the Elmwood branch of Mechanics Savings Bank. Flora was a long-time parishioner of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal. She volunteered with Girls Friendly Society at the church and taught arts and crafts at Lake Hayward where she also served a term as president of the board of governors. Flora had a treasured collection of dog figurines some of which she had since her teens. Flora and Jim enjoyed square dancing and card playing. Flora said "If you can read, you can do anything." She proved it with cookies, apple pie, kitchen towels, and elaborately crocheted seasonal doll dresses. Her mind was sharp to the end, evidenced by her savvy ability at Setback. She remembered names and was friendly to everyone with no exceptions. Please follow her example and make the world a better place. Family and friends are invited to call at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St Rocky Hill on Saturday (December 1, 2018) from 9 AM to 10 AM. A funeral service will follow at 11 AM in the Church of the Good Shepard , 156 Wyllys St. Hartford. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Memorial contributions to the Facial Pain Research Foundation 2653 SW 87th Dr. Suite A, Gainesville, FL. 32608 or the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd. Newington, CT. 06111 are much appreciated.

Lois, Danny, and Flora, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this holiday season. I was informed yesterday by a former colleague that your mother had passed away. Maple View has lost their Mayor Flora who greeted everyone who passed by her with a Hello and sweet smile. God bless you all.

So sorry for your loss. We have many happy memories of our Hopkins family. We were in SC, so couldn't attend services.

I loved Flora fiercely, she was my mom's friend too and I remember so well her delight when my kitties were visiting mom's with me and Flora would come over for the church "Sojourner's" group. My big orange tabby would climb into her lap, sensing how much she loved cats. How comfortable she was with him, and vice versa. A very special lady indeed, so hard to put into words. We are sad with you. Know that God has her, and you in His loving arms.Emily and Ron Banks

What a wonderful lady! Always a smile. For a short time she was in charge of a Setback Group at Lancaster Housing. After giving her announcements before we started to play cards, she would always end with "Be nice".
