Florence Britton, 97, of California, Pa., died Friday, March 30, 2012. She was born Thursday, July 30, 1914, in Roscoe, the daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Higginson) Gibson. She lived her entire life in the California area. She was a graduate of the East Pike Run High School, Class of 1932, and was an active member of the California Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Britton was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Britton, in 1993; two sons, Carey Samuel (Jack) in 1967; and Jim Britton Sr. in 1999; and a grandson, David Carl Britton. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Harris; and four brothers, Bill, Tom, John and Edwin Gibson. Mrs. Britton is survived by the following grandchildren, James William Britton II and wife, Paula, of Daisytown, William Carl Britton and wife, Jan, of Washington, Pa., Connie Douglas and Diane Ellis, of Wilkes-Barre. There are eight great-grandchildren, Jason Carl, Michael James, William Carl, Aaron Mitchell and Jayme Ann Britton, Eamon and Kacie Ann Lenahan and Melody Douglas Kutch. There are three great-great-grandchildren, Louis, Alicia and Larry Kutch; and numerous nephews and nieces, including a very close niece, Isabelle Harris Anderson, of California, Pa. A brother, Sam Gibson, survives in Stuart, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Anita Gibson, of Roscoe, Pa. Also surviving are two daughters-in-law, Joanne Britton Chuey (Michael), of Fairfax, Va., and Greta Britton Benedetti (Angelo), of Wilkes-Barre. Mrs. Britton was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church of California, where she had served for many years as a ruling elder and on many committees. When she was a member of the former Friday Evening Club in the ?50s, she was instrumental in the acquisition of the Pennsylvania Railroad Station for use as a public library. Her interests were her home, family and her church. Friends will be received in the MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME INC., Anthony N. Mariscotti, supervisor, 323 Fourth St., California, Pa., on Monday, April 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, when a prayer service will be held followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of California with Rev. Candace Cook and Elder Kenneth Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Capital Campaign Fund of the First Presbyterian Church, 303 Fourth St., California, PA 15419.
