Fiscella, Florence Gomez

Florence Gomez Fiscella peacefully passed away at her home in Newport News on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the age of 88. Florence was born at home in Yonkers, NY on February 13, 1927 to George A. and Julia T. Gomez. She graduated in 1947 from the Cochran School of Nursing at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers as a Registered Nurse through the Army Nurse Corps. After moving with Benjamin J. Fiscella to Newport News as newlyweds in 1949, she worked at the VA and Riverside Hospital while her husband started B & B Contracting with his brother, Bob. Florence used her first paycheck to buy the company's first power saw. In 1976, she graduated from Christopher Newport College with a BS in Psychology while volunteering at Charter Colonial Institute. She also dedicated her time as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the Shelter for Battered Women, Newsome Park Elementary (as a tutor), the Cub Scouts as a den mother, and the Peninsula Agency on Aging as a driver. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and the League of Women Voters Virginia. Children were an important part of her life—both her own children and those in the community.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benjamin and her son, Thomas G. Fiscella. She is survived by her sister, Mona G. Coogan and brother, George A. Gomez, both of Yonkers, NY; her children, Caryn (Wallace Meissner) of Bethesda, MD, Kevin (Julietta) of Rochester, NY, Glenn of Newport News, Paul (Helen) of Williamsburg, Lynne (John Semmes), Frank, George, and Edward, all of Newport News, Anthony of Malmö, Sweden, and Tristana of Washington, DC as well as nineteen grandchildren, Nicole, Adriana, Sophie, Luanda, Julia, Thomas, Noah, Chaz, Kimberly, Blythe, Ben, Zenna, Orion, Kasper, Maia, Mason, Miles, Alana, Nova and two great-grandchildren, Raina and James Pratt.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 1:00 pm by Rev. John David Ramsey followed by a private family burial in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will welcome all for a Celebration of her Life at Weymouth Funeral Home on the same day from 6-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Norfolk Catholic Worker (not tax-deductible) or LINK of Hampton Roads. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

It has been many years, my grandfather never told me about Aunt Florence joining Uncle Ben. I remember from my youth she always received me with a smile. I would like to express my condolences to you all... Aunt Florence was a sweet and kind person.

I am truly saddened by the loss of Mrs Fiscella ! She was always so dear to me and my sister Barbara Cook when we hug out with Lynne, never raised her voice as we and alot of friends gathered over her house . I even mentioned this to her when one of her sons would bring her to the Warwick Restaurant and she would smile ! I told her my mom ran kids off ,not her! When my mom was suffering with Cmt,a nerve deteriorating disease ,she bought me pamphlets to read up on this disease. When I told her I had been sober, for ten years she hugged me ! And there are so many qualities she had! Left to raise her children alone I must say she was a remarkable woman and I loved her so ! God has gained another angel! Prayers!Love and my condolences to Paul,Glen,Frank,Ed,George,Troy and Lynne she will be sadly missed by all! Never an unkind word! Love to you all❤

Dear Fiscella Family,
We would like to extend our sincere condolences to all of your family. Florence was an exceptional person to all of us as she was so very special and kind to everyone. She will be greatly missed! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We would like to share one small way that she made such a huge impact on the Slezak kids. Back during the summers at Grandma and Grandpa Fiscella's cottage when she would administer either shots or sugar cubes to all of the family's kids, she had such a wonderful way of turning what could be seen as a difficult situation into no difficulty at all... she was in a word "awesome" as always! All our love,
Betty Slezak, sons Terry, Scott, Kenn Slezak and families

Dear Fiscella Family - our thoughts and prayers are with you as celebrate and remember Florence's rich life. What an impressive lady. How fitting that her first paycheck went to buying a saw to help get the construction business going. She always struck me as someone who could figure out how to get things done.

The lovely wooden bench that sits on Riverside Drive today is there due to the thoughtfulness and consideration of Mrs. Fiscella, she wanted the ladies to be able to sit while waiting for transportation to take them home. She will be missed!

WOW! What a remarkable woman she was! :0) You all do not know me. I was just reading the obituaries in the Daily Press and was reading about Mrs. Fiscella and ALL that she did and took care of all her children at the same time! Remarkable! Perhaps her life being so active helped her live a long life. Just wanted to comment on her, may God bless her and your family. May the happy memories you had with her get you through this sad time and may you smile at these memories for the rest of your lives until you see her again. Take Care!
