Florence G. Golomb Clearwater, Fla. Florence G. Golomb, formerly of Monongahela and Mount Lebanon, died Tuesday, February 6, 2008, in Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Fla. She was 91. Mrs. Golomb, who was active in a wide variety of community activities in Monongahela and also with Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc. and Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc. for many years, was born October 9, 1916, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Joseph and Bella Brand. She was elected to the Monongahela Valley Hospital Board of Trustees in 1978 and subsequently served on the Board of Directors of Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc., the hospital?s parent company, until she transitioned to Emeritus status in 2001. She was a life member of the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc., with more than 45 years of service. She served as Auxiliary president at the former Memorial Hospital of Monongahela in New Eagle and was instrumental in the establishment of the Remembrance Gift Giving and Memorial Fund and the annual Strawberry Festival at the hospital. She also played key roles in the consolidation of the auxiliaries at Memorial Hospital of Monongahela and Charleroi-Monessen Hospital when they formed the new Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc. in 1978. In addition, she was instrumental in the planning and construction of the first Gift Shop and Snack Bar at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Mrs. Golomb and her late husband, Dr. Norman G. Golomb, also were active with and benefactors of numerous charitable organizations, including the
American Cancer Society, United Way,
American Heart Association and the March of Dimes. ?Our health system and the community have lost a true and beloved friend,? Louis J. Panza Jr., president and chief executive officer of Monongahela Valley Hospital, said of Mrs. Golomb. ?Florence and Norman truly represented the meaning of generosity and dedication, not only to the enhancement of quality health care but also to the enrichment of the quality of life for people in the mid-Monongahela Valley and beyond. The Golomb family has been for many years, and continues to be highly respected benefactors of our health system and other charitable causes in the community.? It was through the generosity and insight of Dr. and Mrs. Golomb that Monongahela Valley Hospital?s Pathways Promoting Progress In Health philanthropic program was introduced in 1992. The family also was instrumental in the establishment of a new Platinum Level of giving in the Pathways program in 1996. Mrs. Golomb?s children presented a special contribution at that time in recognition and honor of their mother?s 80th birthday. In 1995, to perpetuate the memory of her husband and his commitment to nursing education, Mrs. Golomb established the Norman G. Golomb, M.D. Memorial Education Endowment at Monongahela Valley Hospital. The endowment provides continuing education scholarships for nurses and also sponsors the annual Nurses Appreciation Day at MVH. In 1987, the Monongahela Chamber of Commerce honored Dr. and Mrs. Golomb as Citizens of the Year. They also were the recipients that year of the Congressional District Award from Congressman Austin J. Murphy for outstanding community service. In 1991, Mrs. Golomb and her husband were honored with the Rose Award for Dimensions In Philanthropy at the hospital?s third annual Gala at Churchill Valley Country Club in Pittsburgh. The award, created in honor of Rose Sweeney Melenyzer, recognizes outstanding benefactors for their generosity and dedication to the enhancement of Monongahela Valley Hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Golomb were married for 53 years. Dr. Golomb was a physician for nearly 55 years and a practicing physician in Monongahela for 46 years. Mrs. Golomb is survived by two sons, Roger Golomb, of Clearwater, Fla., and Eliot Golomb, of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter, Lois Treloar, of Pittsburgh; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held today in Florida and interment will take place Friday, February 8, at the Ahavath Achim Cemetery in Kennedy Township (Allegheny County). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in honor of Mrs. Golomb be made to: Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc., 1163 Country Club Road, Monongahela, Pa. 15063, and be designated for the Norman G. Golomb, M.D. Memorial Education Endowment.
