Florence Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 13, 2025.
Florence (Fleecy) Greene Smith

Beloved mother and wife passed away June 23, 2025. Florence was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 59 years, Alexander P Smith. Fleecy was born in Charlottesville Va to the late Christopher A Greene and Ruth Hopkinson Greene. She attended Lane High School and graduated from William & Mary College. After graduating from William and Mary, she worked as a Social Worker in Charlottesville and later in Norfolk Va. Florence honored her lifetime commitment to being of service by volunteering with Contact Outreach Hotline, Judeo Christian Outreach Center, Senior Services and Meals on Wheels. Being a devoted animal lover, she volunteered with the SPCA and rescued and adopted many dogs and cats. The family home was always filled with lots of love and lots of animals. Fleecy was an active member of her dear Galilee Episcopal Church for over 50 years. She was an avid gardner and a longtime member of the Linkhorn Park Garden Club. She was a very gifted painter and was involved with numerous art groups and exhibitions.

Fleecy was a happy adventurous soul who was enthralled by the natural world. She loved the mountains of her hometown and the everchanging beauty of the ocean in her adopted home of Va Beach. She shared this love through her colorful paintings and vibrant garden. She also loved to travel and was fortunate enough to experience many different countries of the world. Fleecy brought joy, humor and love into her life and enjoyed sharing her open heart with all. She will be most deeply missed by all that knew her; especially by her devoted daughter, Sarah Smith Byrne and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins far and wide.

Godspeed Fleecy!
