Floyd Benjamin Hornbuckle

September 23, 1953 - July 14, 2025

Floyd Benjamin Hornbuckle passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, in the loving care of Elevation Hospice and the Villas of Sunny Acres after a courageous battle with bone cancer.

Born in Denver, Colorado, on September 23, 1953, Floyd was the son of Jean and Robert Hornbuckle. He grew up surrounded by a large, close-knit family: brothers Rick Sciumbato (Judy), Bobby Hornbuckle (deceased), Steve Hornbuckle (deceased), Ted Hornbuckle, and Tom Hornbuckle; and sisters Laurel Dakini and Suzanne Miller (Bill Sucke). He also leaves behind another sister Rebecca Buckingham (Terry) who joined the family in 1991, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

Floyd was a devoted father to Lonnie Hornbuckle and a proud, doting grandfather to Grace and Noah Hornbuckle. He shared with Lonnie his adventurous and fun-loving spirit - introducing him to skiing at just three years old and gifting him his first motorbike at seven. In his youth, Floyd was an accomplished gymnast at Mapleton High School, specializing in the rings, trampoline, and diving. His athleticism was legendary - whether walking on his hands through his mother's house or performing flips on the dance floor.

An avid outdoorsman, Floyd loved camping, skiing, biking, hiking, riding his motorcycle, and soaking in the hot springs in some of the most beautiful places along Colorado's Western Slope. He was also an enthusiastic musician, and a gifted songwriter, and poet, playing the harmonica and mandolin while sharing his love of blues and classic rock with family and friends and performing at various venues and events. His favorite artists included John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite, Los Lobos, and Johnny Winter.

Floyd was a man of contrasts and was quite the paradox. He was a force of nature with a commanding presence; sentimental and generous, yet contentious and passionate. He carried his mother's loving kindness and compassion and his father's temperamental disposition, making him both a protector of family and friends and a fierce fighter for justice. Floyd organized and performed at Cancer Benefits in Battlement Mesa, CO and Glenwood Springs, CO featuring local musicians and artists. He was also a full-time caregiver for his father Robert in Battlement Mesa from 1996-2000, and brother Steve in Mesa, Arizona from 2020-2022 walking alongside them as they both faced cancer. Whether you were a family member, friend, or stranger in need, Floyd would do everything in his power to offer a hand.

Over the years, Floyd worked as a restaurant cook, demolition worker at Rocky Flats, tour bus driver, miner, and forest firefighter. He lived and worked in several mountain towns along the I-70 corridor, including Silver Plume, Vail, Glenwood Springs, Rifle, and Battlement Mesa, making countless friends along the way and performing in the Down Valley Trash Band. After retiring in Mesa, Arizona, he returned to the Denver area in August 2024 to be near his family and lifelong friends.

Floyd will be remembered for his sense of humor, strong personality, love of family, and generous heart.

The Other Side

I've seen it all go bad son, I've seen it all go bad son

Your daddy don't walk on water

And I've seen it all go bad,

I've had it all so good babe

Like your mammy cooking cakes in the kitchen

I had it all so good

I've been to the other side children, I've been to the other side

Don't cha worry about a thing people

Because life was made for livin'

Don't you worry about a thing

I'll see you on the other side sons and daughters

I will see you on the other side

I'll see you on the other side good people

Only One walked on water

I'll see you on the other side

- By Floyd Hornbuckle

Brother Floyd, I'm thinking about you today and missing you. You had a huge impact on every one who knew you, and your celebration of life was a testiment to who you were, what you represented, and how you navigated your time on this earth. We laughed, cried, and reminisced about all the memories of you while surrounded by family and friends just as you wanted. You will always be remebered and in our hearts forever. Say hello to Mom, Bobby, and Steve and enjoy your love for music on the eternal heavenly stage.

My Mom made this vest for Floyd. She was grateful for music he played for her and our family at my folks 50th anniversary.... RedRiver Valley etc... He wrote a beautiful song about her. Floyd was a Brother to me. Both of us coming from very similar backgrounds of hard working people and Mothers of Catholic backgrounds with lots of siblings. When his Dad got sick I brought them venison stew. We cried a few times and honored each other thru hard times and celebrated a lot more good times! Especially his Son, Lonnie. What a great Dad! What a legend my Brother Floyd remains forever in my Heart. He prayed me thru my breast cancer and I prayed like crazy for him. He is playing his music and kindness with Angels and I will love my Brother Floyd forever
