Forrest Preece Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2011.
Forrest “Toddy Preece, Sr. was born in Austin on November 24, 1910. He died in his hometown on January 4, 2011. In a world of change, he was a model of constancy. He stayed in Austin his entire life; lived from February 1940 until his death in the house he built on Sinclair Avenue in the Rosedale neighborhood; and remained married to Florence Swearingen Preece for 72 years. Toddy spent his childhood in the Preece family home on Alice Avenue, (which is now called Medical Parkway). After graduating from Austin High, he became a carpenter. Along with his father and brothers, he contracted and built many houses in Rosedale, Hyde Park, Tarrytown, and other local neighborhoods. He is survived by his wife Florence, his son Forrest, Jr., his sister Dickie Pattillo, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six of his brothers and sisters. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. A graveside service will be held in Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Drive, at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 7th.

I am a distant relative and I did not know "Toddy" personally but we are related in the Preece line of Ancestry. I do send my belated condolences to the family. My grandfather was, Franklin Cyrus Johnson. His father was Reuben Kendon Johnson whose parents were Cyrus Johnson and Nancy Ann Preece. Best wishes to all the Preece family.

Aunt Florence and Forrest we did not learn of Uncle Toddy's death until Sunday evening, 1-9-11.We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to you all. Uncle Toddy, as my dad's older brother, had a great influence on him and all of us as well. His humor, wit, kindness, and grace will be truly missed.

Forrest Preece was my mother's first cousin. Though we never met, I did talk with Florence several years ago and had hoped to meet with them one day. Our sincere condolences to Florence and her family and also to Dickie Patillo, the sister of Forrest. May God bless each of you and give you comfort during this time of grief.

I remember Mr. Preece driving down Sinclair in his Riviera as my sister and friends played in the street...way back in the day. He always smiled and waved at us. We all liked seeing him. I always enjoyed stopping as my mom would visit with Mr. & Mrs. Preece if they happened to be out in the yard, when we'd take a walk. Mr. Preece will be missed. My thoughts are with your family.

I always enjoyed meeting Forrest Preece Sr. at all the great garage sales and seeing him arrive in the Buick Riviera. He was always looking for old golf clubs and other treasures. We would always take time to visit about you and I, Austin and other stuff. Forrest Preece Sr. was a great gentleman, a kind and wise person, and Austin will miss him.
Have a great journey,
David and Amy Bloebaum
