Fran Angeline

Endicott - Francis Joseph Angeline, 83, of Endicott, NY, passed away on July 6, 2018 at Sunrise Senior Living Center, in Exton, Pennsylvania. He is predeceased by his parents Leandra and Frank, as well as his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Grace and Loftus Hanley. His beloved wife, Pat, passed away in November, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage, and not a moment passed without him speaking of, or thinking about Patricia after her passing. He is survived by his three children and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Kathleen, Laurence, and Vaun. He and his wife Patricia shared great pride and joy in their grandchildren: Ryley, Cary, Jessica, Andre, Anton, Chloe and Chelsea. It is easy to tick off Fran's accomplishments: captain of the Union Endicott football team in 1951, tight end and defensive end; captain of the Colgate team playing the same positions in 1952-1955; he coached for Johnson City in 1957-1959. But it was Union Endicott High School, where Coach Angeline really made his mark. He was the tennis coach and football coach throughout his career from 1960-1992, and it was there, under the lights, where he brought pride and guts to the game. He paced the sidelines like a tiger at the ready, an eye trained on the game, poised to pounce on a questionable call by the officials, ever roaring commands to his players. With Fran at the helm, the Tigers won 219 victories, two New York State championships, in 1979 and 1989, and Fran was named New York State coach of the year in 1979 and 1989. In 1979, he was honored with the National High School Coach of the Year award. In 2014 the U-E field house was named after Fran. Selected to the Section 4 Sports Hall of Fame, the Union-Endicott High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Greater Binghamton Area Sports Hall of Fame, it is little wonder that in 2008, Fran was honored to be included amongst a select few honored as a distinguished U-E alumni who made a difference, an award shared by world famous figures, some-- professional athletes. Fran did not just write x's and o's and bark commands on the sidelines, though. He was a father figure to his young men—offering condolences to the grieving amongst his players—to the fatherless, he hugged them closer and nurtured their wounds. He built up the football program by building up boys to men, through discipline, respect, dignity and the unwavering belief that every young man deserves a shot, regardless of size or talent, at being the best he can be—on and off the field. Far more than a coach and athlete, Fran played the violin and piano as a child, winning competitions, and—a crooner--no one could harmonize better. Every Christmas he arranged for his Latin and German classes to sing carols at local hospitals and nursing homes, offering the students extra credit for giving this gift to the sick and elderly. Fran participated in his community through sports, music, mentorship, teaching, authoring a book, volunteering for the Special Olympics and reading to the visually impaired. He expected all those he touched to participate in life with the same joy and enthusiasm. Whether it was through music, academics, artistic talents, or athletic pursuits, each child's gifts brought Fran joy and an expectation that gifts are meant to be nurtured and shared. Fran believed every human being's "reach should exceed his grasp," or, as his favorite saying goes, "what is a heaven for?"

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday 10 am at St. Ambrose Church, 203 Washington Avenue, Endicott. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main St., Endicott Wednesday from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Fran and Pat Angeline Award that provides a yearly grant to a deserving UE student for his college studies. Please send donations to Broome Tioga BOCES CBO, attn. Robin Chalachan, 100 Marshall Drive, Endicott, NY 13760. Notes of condolences can be sent to Chris and Kathleen Angeline at 425 Prescott Drive, Chester Springs, PA 19425.

My sympathy and condolences to the Angeline family. Fran was not only my Tennis partner but a good friend. Many a summer day we spent on the courts at SUNY or at our Riverside Dr. court with our late partners, Frank Pollard, John Frenchko(who claims to have had the best forehand in tennis) and Bob Rosencrance. May they all rest in peace and possibly form a doubles match in heaven and i will jump in to play the winners!!!

Fran was 3 years ahead of me at U-E and I played basketball instead of football, but I knew Fran as a friend. After college Fran, was also a pretty good basketball player. He was a good shot and being Fran he would always hustle.. we played together on teams around the Triple Cities and at the Endicott Boys Club. Fran was the type of guy one looked up to and really respected.

About 35 years later, I was living in Ithaca and I had a serious heart attack and hadn't seen Fran for all those years and I received a 2 page letter from Fran. He had heard about my attack(he also had heart issues)and receiving this uplifting letter from him meant so much to me at atime that I really needed it. It was a really great gift to me and I will always be grateful to Fran and the truly great personthat he was.

Fran taught us to attack our fears and our weaknesses head on, and in the process we learned to accomplish things we might never have attempted without his example.

Condolences to the Angeline family. I had the honor of having Mr. Angeline for Latin and helping him with the tennis team. He was an inspiration to me. I have always kept his poem The Man in The Glass with me. I will never forget his teaching: it went far beyond the books. He will never be forgotten as he touched so many hearts.

On behalf of the Johnson City Spalik Family I extend our most heartfelt sympathy to all of you. Your dad was an amazing man as so many have said and a very special friend to our father Jack Spalik. We heard many stories of 'Frannie' from their times together as teammates at Colgate University. Their friendship lasted a lifetime and no doubt they are once again singing together in Heaven. Coach has left behind an incredible legacy. Hold close to your heart your special memories.

Condolences to the Angeline family. I am old enough to remember when Fran was called Tony Angeline. My wife and I were a couple of years ahead of him in high school. He always liked my wife's first name which is Vaughn. We noted the daughter's name is Vaun. Fran was a fine athlete, but he also was superb academically, as many of his awards in Latin indicate. I am proud to have a signed copy of his book received on my 65th birthday in 1997. May the great memories give you peace and comfort.

My condolences to the Angeline family. Coach Angeline was a inspiration to so many of us that were fortunate to have been a student of his whether the class room, tennis court, football field or in life. Coach taught us how to strive to be better, how to overcome obstacles and endure when the odds weren't in our favor. I can't express the depth of gratitude I have for the man.

He as a father, a teacher, a coach on the tennis court and football field and most of all in life. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

I went to JC while Fran was in school at UE and became friendly with him when he ran the Enjoy Tennis courts where our Harpur tennis team played our matches. We had some good practice matches together and Fran was always friendly --always. But, in a match he was very competitive, which is one of the things I liked about him. --notably he usually won the match. A great player and coach wherever he went. I also treasure my signed copy of his book, "This Tiger's Tale". The book was sold out, to no one's surprise, and my close friend from UE and Harpur, Jerry Beck, made sure I got a copy--and Fran was nice enough to remember me. I'm sad to lose a friend like Fran, even tho our distance apart was so great. God Bless.....

Fran Angeline is the definition of an Icon. When you think Section 4 sports history, you think of Fran Angeline I never met Mr. Angeline. I graduated Ithaca High in 1970 and have kept track of Section 4 sports for nearly 50 years. The world lost a great leader and a better person. Thank you Coach and congratulations! You made a difference! My sincere condolences to the family. You have many good memories. Your spirit lives on.

Oh, what a great presence; and, oh, what a loss! Mr. Angeline will always be my excellent, dynamic Latin teacher ("Miss Stahl, it's your chance to SHINE!"), and, of course, our great hero CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL COACH! He played violin in the UEHS orchestra in the early '50s, when my father, Crawford Stahl, was the band and orchestra conductor; and they remained friends when Mr. Angeline came back to UEHS as our winning football coach. My father always bought us beautiful orchids on Easter from Lea and Frank's "Angeline's Florist"; and I fondly remember Mr. Angeline's dear parents, too. The last time I had the privilege of seeing Mr. Angeline was in 2008 when he came to my father's funeral; and, he also attended some of our UEHS Class of 1965 reunions - another CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR! God bless Fran Angeline and his family always! With much loving sympathy and great appreciation, Alida Stahl Augen

On behalf of Coach Angeline's family, Coach will always be remembered as a hero among many that attended the UE School District and beyond. You did not have to play the game to know him. He was a friend and mentor to all that knew him. Heaven only selects the best. Coach will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.

Mr Angeline was more than just a Coach to me and many others; he challenged us in the classroom, on the court and the field and inspired us to reach high for our goals. Looking back almost 40 years now its incredible how his message has stayed with me and I can only thank him again for his strength and conviction in helping so many young people. Rest in peace Coach.

Fran Angeline was a man with a heart and soul of love. As a father and mother whose son had the good fortune to play under the guidance of Fran, we are thankful for Fran's ability to see compassion and respect in a tough sport where grace is learned under fire. Fran was a master teacher and fine person.

I had the pleasure of playing for coach Angeline for 2 years. I will always remember him as a fierce competitor. He demanded pride and class from his players. One of the many quotes he had, which i will always remember. " if you give !00 percent 100 percent of the time. good things will come your way". My deepest condolences to The Angeline family. May he rest in peace.

It is easy to use the word "hero," without considering it's substance. Fran Angeline was truly a hero because his life was lived for others...his family, his students, his players, and those whose lives needed an assist in finding their way.

He was a legend when I was young, and moreso these many years later.

My condolences and sympathy to Fran's family.

Coach Angeline began his coaching career, fresh out of Colgate, in the Fall of 1957, at Johnson City High School. He never forgot that I scored his first TD as a HS COACH, and through our 60 year friendship, he reminded me of that game just about every time we saw each other. If he didn't, I REMINDED HIM ... R.I.P. COACH.
