It sounds like she was a jewel in every way. She led an active work life and an amazing retirement life. She might have made me a good student if I'd been in her class. What wonderful memories I stumbled across today. I wish they'd been mine.

I will miss Francis. I met her at the Swasey book club in 1999, and we became fast friends. I often stopped by her home to visit with her. A wonderful talented woman with a great sense of humor that not everyone picked up on. I had major back surgery in December 2017 and just recently heard about her passing. I will miss her.

Mrs. Bentley was not only my favorite teach of all time but also of all my siblings. All four of us remember her well and were the recipients of her love and expertise. I'll never forget her drilling our class on how to correctly pronounce the word "mischievous". Her passion for teaching has never been matched by any other teacher I had. I was lucky enough to have her for both English and Humanities and they were my favorite classes because of her. RIP Mrs. Bentley, you are a rare human being!

I remember Mrs Bentley very fondly from Meeker. She expected a lot but gave more then she asked. She helped me build confidence in myself, so for that reason, I will always treasure my time with her. Sure hope I didn't mis-spell anything or I will hear about it when we meet again! Thank you to the Bentley family for sharing her spunk with us all.

My favorite teacher of all time, bar none! She believed in me and prompted me to focus on my writing skills when I was in junior high; she even came to our house to tell my parents how important it was that they foster my efforts. I loved her then and still do now, and have been thinking of her so much lately. I wish I would have taken the time to seek her out and thank her. Rest in Peace, Mrs. Bentley, and thank you for making my life better. Blessings to the family.

Ah, Sarge. By expecting excellence, by treating us like thinking people, not mere children, you helped us rise to the challenge and to grow up a little. You demonstrated a rare combination of sternness, fairness, kindness, and humor, always with a twinkle in your eye.
Thank you for all the lessons that have stayed with us, your grateful students, throughout our lives.

Mrs. Bentley was by far one of the most outstanding teachers I ever had. She always had a knack of reaching deep down inside my soul and bring out the best in me. Such an awesome teacher, and human being. Rest in Peace my dear mentor - you will be missed. Prayers also to her sons and family.

How can I thank Mrs. Bentley? I've carried her voice in my head for more than forty yearsthrough college and graduate school and a career in publishing. Who can forget the reject stamp she applied to subpar work, her spelling and pronunciation tests, or her passion for sentence diagramming? She was a tough and caring taskmaster and I loved her for it.

I was referred to this site by a friend as I never met Francis Bentley. Having read what has been posted online I believe she epitomizes the phrases, a life well lived and a career well spent.

I always smile when I think of Mrs. Bentley. Her love for her students and for the English language made a huge impression on me. I will never forget the time I took a risk and wrote something out of my comfort zone. She rewarded me with a genuine expression of excitement and approval (which meant the world to me)! She had to walk with a bit of a hitch because of her hip, but I can still see her walking the halls of Wilson High School and moving faster than any of us! Mrs. Bentley was a gift to all of her students, and she will be remembered fondly.

A truly amazing and gifted educator, my time in her class in the 1980's was precious and has served me well in life. I was fortunate to have seen her in recent years at Franke Toby Jones and she was ever so inspiring in her final years. Hats off to one of Tacoma's, Washington's, America's and the World's best teachers!

Mrs. Bentley was my favorite teacher at Wilson HS. Though I ended up studying science after high school, I have always loved English and literature because of herI even took extra English classes in college! She was tough but fair and kind. I can still remember very clearly many of the things I learned in her class. When I returned to the area to start working after I had moved away for school for nearly a decade, I was so touched that she sent me a letter after reading about me in the newspaper! She was really one of the best and will be missed by so many. I hope she knew how well-loved she was by her students and how many lives she touched! Thank you for all of your wonderful contributions, Mrs. Bentley! May you Rest In Peace. Deepest condolences to her family.

Great was my surprise when I entered my sophomore English class in the fall of 1977 and found I had a teacher who cared whether her students learned or not. She made sure we did. She pushed us to understand grammar, to appreciate great literature (she claimed she went to bed with Dickens every night....I've tried it a few times myself), to use parallel structure, to formulate a sustainable Controlling Purpose (always capitalize the C and the P!) when writing essays, and to remember that Tempus Fugits. I can see her pounding out the syllables from Marc Antony's speech Oh pardon me thou bleeding piece of earth/that I am meek and gentle with these butchers while teaching us iambic pentameter; I can still recite Robert Frost's Stopping by Woods, and I think of her every time I sigh out the last line on busy days but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep/ and miles to go before I sleep.
Mrs. Bentley was a teacher like no other and those of us blessed to have had her are better people for our time under her tutelage.
I can honestly say I am a teacher today because of her.
Your promises are kept; your miles are walked. Those lovely dark and deep woods await.
God's blessing on your journey.

Mrs. Bentley was a wonderful teacher. She was very tough and did not put up with any nonsense in her classroom. I remember her fondly and I am very grateful that I had her as one of my teachers at Wilson High School. May she Rest In Peace as she is one of the Lord's angels now.

Mrs. Bentley was the best teacher I ever had. I remember her saying "Say what you mean and mean what you say..." Loved that. The other was "I love absentees, but I hate absenteeism." RIP Mrs. B.

Thanks to Mrs. Bentley I can correctly pronounce the following words: almond, coupon, soiree, mauve...and told me that writing without correct spelling is like enjoying the dinner without doing the dishes. These are words that have served me well over the last 40 or so years. A humble and heartfelt "thank you" to this wonderful educator who made me believe in myself.

Mrs. Bentley truly changed my life through her teaching and was my absolute favorite teacher at Wilson High School.
In Honors English she opened up a whole new world of Shakespeare and epic poetry as well as the modern romantic poets to us. This changed my view of the world and ingnited a love of literature that has remained with me.
Although a tough and exacting teacher, Mrs. Bentley had confidence in her students' abilities and expected them to give their best. Her belief in us instilled a quiet self confidence in me that had not existed prior and I will forever be indebted to her for this.
Throughout the years, whenever someone has asked, Who was your favorite teacher?Mrs. Benttley has always been the one whom I named, and came fondly to mind. I don't know how we were so fortunate to have such an amazing, overqualified, dedicated and caring teacher/person to enrich our lives at Wilson, but I am so grateful that she was willing and able to touch our young lives with her special brand of Bentley magic.
Much Love Mrs. Bentley. God Speed.

Say what you mean and mean what you say, or off with your head! And, I go to bed every night with Charles Dickens. She was wonderful. I have thought of her often over my lifetime. Mrs. Bentley was definitely a teacher who made a difference. I sincerely loved her. Condolences to her family.

Mrs. Bentley set a very high bar for her students, and we are all the better for it. I remember her very fondly from my days at Wilson. (And yes, I will spit out my gum, Mrs. B.)

No other teacher I've met, before or since, has melded the encouragement of free expression with the highest academic standards the way Mrs. Frances "Sarge" Bentley did. The person I became was largely shaped by her example and by my fellow "scholars." (As she called us) I hope Mrs. Bentley knew how much she meant to all of us.
