A memorial service for Frances Evelyn Bivins Cloninger, 88, of Marshall, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2010, at the Colonial Chapel of Sullivan Funeral Home with Rev. John Bayliss officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010. Mrs. Cloninger passed away Friday, April 30, 2010, in Marshall after a lengthy illness. She was born March 13, 1922, in Longview, to Franklin Herbert Bivins and Fannie Mae Sisk Bivins. She graduated from Longview High School where she was a cheerleader for the 1937 state championship football team and on the high school tennis team. She attended Kilgore College where she was a member of the first Rangerette Drill Team and wore their smallest belt. She married Carl Cloninger Jr. on Aug. 21, 1942. They were married for 55 years. They enjoyed many years of traveling together to the 50 states, Europe, Southeast Asia and Australia. Mrs. Cloninger was a 64 year member of First United Methodist Church in Marshall, where she was active in and past president of the United Methodist Women and was a member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. She was for many years an active member of Marshall Lakeside Country Club where she was an avid golfer. Mrs. Cloninger was an avid reader, a bridge player, and lifelong sports enthusiast. When she was not physically able to play herself, she would watch football, baseball, golf, tennis or almost any other sports on TV at all hours. She is survived by her daughter, Carla Cloninger Huffman and husband George of Marshall; son, Larry Bivins Cloninger and wife Sherry of Longview; and one brother, William V. "Bill" Bivins of Shreveport, La. Additional survivors include her six grandchildren (who affectionately called her "Pooh"), Amy Evelyn Young and husband David of Sugar Land, Laree Suzannah Stone and husband Marc of Anchorage, Alaska, George Carl Allen "Cody" Huffman and wife Angela of Marshall, Christopher Laurance Cloninger and wife Heather of Carthage, William Barry Huffman and wife Linda of Marshall, and Matthew Burton Cloninger and wife Macarena of Victoria; 10 great - grandchildren, Carlee and Emma Young, Rachel and Ellie Stone, Marleah and Rhett Huffman, Nick, Haley and Christopher Cloninger, Geordon Huffman and Lucas Cloninger; sister-in-law, Margaret Bivins of Waskom; brother-in-law, James Sidney and Liz Cloninger of Grand Junction, Colo.; many nieces and nephews and their families; and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; five brothers, Marshall, Jake, Bailey, John, and Bert Jr.; and two sisters, Ruth Gwynn and Jessie Coats. Special thanks to her caregivers, Betty Winn, Diann Simmons, Rosemary Holmes, Johnnie Faye Whitaker, Patricia Jimerson and the entire staff at Heritage House.
