Frances L. Cowan

Frances L. Cowan, 81, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 12:40 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at her son's home in Mt. Vernon.She was born in East St. Louis on Thursday, April 15, 1926, the daughter of Ralph Franklin Sheley, Sr. and Carrie Evelyn (Hall) Sheley. She first married Roy W. Pinkston, Sr. and he preceded her in death. She later married George Cowan and he preceded her in death. She worked at various area restaurants in management.Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Rev. Wendell Garrison officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County.Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Frances is survived by two sons, Roy W. Pinkston, Jr. and wife Patricia of Sesser, and John E. Pinkston and wife Sandra of Mt. Vernon; grandson, Roy W. Pinkston, III and wife Debbie of Benton; and sister, Lula Blake of Clinton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.Her parents, both husbands, two brothers, Ralph Franklin Sheley, Jr. and Raymond Edward Sheley, and five sisters, Evelyn Storck, Willie Draper, Ruth Scheppel, Mildred Graddy and Delores Wilkerson, preceded her in death.Frances was a member of the Jefferson County Republican Women and was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt.
