Francis Dickens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 20 to Jul. 21, 2021.
Francis Leon Dickens, 73 of Leonardtown, MD affectionately known as Frankie D and Slack departed this earthly life peacefully at his home on Saturday July 17, 2021. Francis was born on February 29, 1948 in Piney Point, MD to the late James "Jim" and Viola (Bar) Dickens.

Francis, in his early years was educated at St. Peter Claver Catholic elementary and later graduated from Cardinal Gibbons Institute in Ridge, MD. After graduation Francis relocated to the DC-Metro area and obtained employment with M.S. Ginn & Co., in Hyattsville MD. In the early 2000's, he retired after providing over 30 years of dedicated service to the company and soon after, moved back to St. Mary's County. While back home he worked for Ryken Catholic High School and gave over 10 years of service to Staples office supply in California, MD.

Francis had a sense of humor and loved to laugh and joke. He would let everyone know that since his birthday only came every four years because it landed on leap year he was technically half his true age. Jokingly, he was the youngest old man that we knew. Francis had a passion for music, he loved to sing and had a special talent of playing the guitar. He also enjoyed laying back, relaxing, and watching westerns wrestling and his favorite movies on tv. Like most, Francis also loved his sports. He played softball with "The DC players" playing against other teams that included some of his friends and family. Sundays were special, he and his brother-in-law, George, would get together at his home, have a few drinks and watch the home team games. During baseball season, they'd watch the Washington Nationals and football season they would watch the Washington football team (formally known as the Redskins), which were two of Francis's favorite teams. Those memories will be cherished forever and you will be greatly missed.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers James, Joseph, Russell, Vincent, Paul and Ernest; niece, Cheryl "Na Na" Young; three nephews, Ernest "Brother" Dickens, Tyrone "Jelly roll" Briscoe, George Stewart; two great-nephews, William "Ton Ton" Briscoe and Marquise Robinson.

Francis is survived by his daughter, Tawanda Price and granddaughter, Jasmine Price of Forestville MD; Sisters, Cecelia (Jr) Young of Loveville, MD, Mary Alice (George) Stewart of Leonardtown, MD, Elaine Frederick of Bushwood, MD, Elizabeth Barnes of Temple Hills, MD; two sisters-in-law, Annette Dickens of St. Inigoes, MD, Laura "Frances" Dickens of Lexington Park, MD; two Godchildren, Vicki Harris of Waldorf, Damien Berry of Clinton, MD and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 for visitation at 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. George's Catholic Church, 19199 St. George's Church Road, Valley Lee, MD. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
