Frank was born on December 12, 1922 and passed away on June 9, 2013. Frank was a resident of San Marcos, CA. Born on December 12, 1922, Ret. U.S.N. Cmdr. Francis "Frank" Xavier Kern III in Chicago, Illinois, a resident of San Marcos, California, passed away on June 9, 2013 in Carlsbad, California. He was a resident of San Diego County for 45 years. In his youth, Frank's family moved from Chicago to Boston, MA and then to Philadelphia, PA, where he received his elementary and high school education. After high school, he was nominated and accepted to attend the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Frank graduated is 1945 and served with the Naval Intelligence Service until he retired at the rank of Commander in 1970. During his Naval career, Frank served in various locations in the U.S., Middle East, and Europe and ultimately settled in San Diego. Frank married Evelyn Kuechler in 1954. From this marriage, the couple had two sons, Francis "Buck" X. (Nina) Kern IV of Richardson, Texas and Richard H. Kern of Orlando, Florida. After the passing of his first wife, Frank married Beverly B. Maloof in 1983. From this marriage there are two step children, Roni Rudolph (Donn) Austin of Encinitas, California and Joseph P. (Carole) Maloof of San Marcos, California. Frank's activities and interests were many. He was an avid sports enthusiast. He was active in soccer and golf throughout his youth, played on the Naval Academy Soccer Team and continued to golf into his retirement years. Frank enhanced his love of sports by serving as a Curator and Executive Director of the San Diego Hall of Champions for several years. Frank held a love of music, especially from the '40's and '50's. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Academy choral group and often regaled his family and friends by bursting into song at any given moment. In addition, Frank was passionate in keeping up to date on current events, rose and vegetable gardening, the theater, travel, story telling, and most of all, providing continual love and support to his entire family. Throughout his life, Frank was a faithful member of the Catholic Church, most recently St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos. Frank was pre-deceased by his parents Francis X. Kern II and Marie, his two wives, Evelyn and Beverly, his two brothers, twins John and Joseph Kern, and granddaughter, Lauren Beth Rudolph. In addition to his children, Frank is survived by grandsons, Taylor Kern of Michigan, D. Michael Rudolph of Encinitas, CA, and granddaughters, Buck and Nina's daughter's Angela Fabian of Dallas, TX and Jessica Fabian of Los Angeles, CA, and Jordan Austin of Corpus Christi, TX. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 1147 Discovery St. in San Marcos, with Burial at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, (an extension of Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego)
