Francis Madden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2025.
Francis James "Skip" Madden, 93, passed away on March 11, 2025, in Stamford, Connecticut. Born on June 15, 1931, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Skip's early years were marked by a strong academic foundation. He attended the Boston Latin School and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy before continuing his education at Princeton University, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, Skip proudly served in the United States Marine Corps at the conclusion of the Korean War, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.

Skip built a distinguished career in financial services, working in Chicago and New York for Smith Barney, White Weld, Drexel Burnham and Lazard Frères & Co. Later, he transitioned into executive recruiting, contributing his expertise to Russell Reynolds and Berndtson International before founding FJ Madden Inc. with a focus on executive leadership in the capital markets.

Beyond his career, Skip had a lifelong passion for sailing-a love that earned him the nickname "Skipper" at an early age. A long-time resident of Rye, NY, he was an enthusiastic tennis player into his 50s at the Manursing Island Club and even took on the challenge of running a marathon later in life. These pursuits reflected his adventurous spirit and commitment to staying active.

Skip was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and trusted friend. He is survived by his former wife Cornelia Robinson, brothers Donald and Kevin; his four sons Leigh (Marnie), David (Nancy), Benjamin (Phyllis), and Geoffrey; as well as his eight beloved grandchildren Connor, Tyler, Cormac, Luke, Dylan, Mackenzie, Shea and Liam.

Skip's legacy is one of warmth, determination, and deep connections with those around him. His memory will live in the hearts of family and friends who cherished him dearly. His family and friends remember him as a pillar of strength and a source of unwavering support. His presence brought joy and comfort to those who knew him, and his impact on their lives is immeasurable. The love and respect he garnered from his family and friends are a testament to the remarkable person he was.

Lory and I are just now learning about Skip's passing. We loved Skip!! I just sent him an email and sorry to hear it was not received. Skip was a great friend and neighbor for 10 years here in Corona Del Mar and we tried to stay in touch while he was in the east. I am reaching out to sons Leigh and Geoff, the only two sons we met, to give them our condolences. We were sad when Skip moved back east but knew it was something he wanted to do to be with his family. We have many fun stories of Skip and his little chocolate lab Zuki...110 lbs little. Skip was the classic American family hero with his history of growing up, college, the service, love of sailing, the family, NYC train rides, raising four boys (yikes) and his passion for people. We sent Skip a book on sailing last year that reminded me so much about him. I am hoping he was able to finish it. If any of the family ever wants to visit his CDM home or hear some Calif Skip stories they are welcomed to contact us at [email protected]. Rest in peace Skip, we will miss you. I feel so blessed in having shared quality time with this wonderful person in daily walks on the beach & little hiking trails in Corona Del Mar. Our friendship quickly turned into an open book & reflection of our lives. We were both so in tune with our beloved dogs, quick wit & laughter that had us choking! Even though we shared a 30 year difference, we were simply kindred spirits seemingly looked at life through the same lens.

I will miss Skip madly! He saved my butt on many occasions. During the course of 10 days, I was under extreme pressure with a new satellite project in trying to win a huge proposal. He would listen to my frustration as we walked and said drop it off and I´ll see what I can add or simplify to which I was ecstatic for his assessment that I duly dropped it off while he gently made suggestions. Still, at the end of his evaluation, it was still 16 pages too long. Prior to making the submission Skip said come on over. I´ve got a surprise for you. I went to his house he had reduced and composed everything that I needed and wanted to say so eloquently in 3-Pages!

He taught me so much in the psychology & process of course I won the bid! I said Skip, why did you take so long and he said because I could see that you were growing, shifting & learning and I wanted you to walk your path in communicating the final results. After that, I became his avid student (he my mentor) over anything that he wrote or spoke about. Yes he was brilliant but I walked him through the basic steps of computer software so we were even! And we would then celebrate our victories over Banderas´s chicken in CDM!

What a guy, above the high water mark ... just an extraordinary spirit. I will always carry you in my heart buddy and thank you so much for all the shared golden memories.

Sweet Aloha on your Celestial Sojourn!

Love Patricia

I am saddened to hear about the loss of a wonderful man and friend. I worked with Skip as his occupational therapist back in Virginia. We spent countless hours discussing health, fitness, family, politics, etc. You name it, Skip had great advice for it. I cherish the time I worked with Skip greatly.

He will be remembered fondly by so many from our community. I am so sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace and enjoy the sunny, blue skies.
