Francis PEREIRA Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 3, 2003.
PEREIRA, Francis (Bob) Peacefully, surrounded by his family, February 28th at the General Campus, Ottawa Hospital, Bob Pereira, in his 83rd year, after a long battle with kidney failure and cancer, fought with courage, dignity and concern for others. Beloved husband, best friend and soul mate of Ruth for 55 years. Proud and loving Dad of Janice Pereira, Lynda Danford and David Pereira (Ginette Rochon), proud and loving Poppa of Hartt and Scott Danford, playmate of Firefly, Rudi and Amber. Bob was born in Georgetown, Guyana, where his father was a British Colonial Administrator. At the start of WWII, as a teenager, he worked on land surveying, road and railroad construction through the jungle to a new bauxite mine site, essential to aluminum production for wartime aircraft. After two near fatal attacks of Malaria, he came to Canada to continue his education with a degree in Physics. While working as a summer student with Fraser-Brace Engineering on the construction of the Atomic Pile at Chalk River, he was proud to make a significant contribution with his mastery of certain precision instruments. Instant promotion followed and after graduation, a full-time job with Fraser-Brace and marriage to Ruth. Bob continued to enjoy a long career in construction and building management with Alcan (Arvida Works) and Public Works in Ottawa. Square Dancing, first encountered in Chalk River, became a life-long passion, and last year he was proud to receive the Award of Excellence from the Canadian Square & Round Dance Society, in recognition of his nationwide organization and promotion of Square Dancing. Bob has always been known to his family as "Mr. Fix-It" for his skill and delight in fixing anything. We know he will now be saying "Let's get on with it" as he begins his new job as our Guardian Angel. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Barry Bruce of the West Carleton Medical Group; to Dr. Page, Lynne and Francine of the Home Dialysis Unit (Riverside Campus); Dr. Akbari and Dr. Perry, Valerie, Debbie, Angela, Jackie, Tina, Carrie, Rita, Lenore, Kathleen and others at 7NW (General Campus), and to Father Stewart Murray of St. James Church, Carp, for their exceptional loving care and compassion. At Bob's request, there will be no visitation. Please remember him as he used to be. A Celebration of Bob's life, followed by a reception, will take place at The Church of St. James the Apostle, 3774 Carp Road, on Wednesday, March 5th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kidney Foundation, Prostate Cancer Society, Ottawa Humane Society, or to the Church of St. James' Building and Renovation Fund, would be appreciated.
