Francis Deen Peterson

Francis Deen Peterson, late of Decorah, Iowa died peacefully at age 96 on February 5, 2023 at the Grandview Care Center in Oelwein after a short residency. He lived a long and fulfilling life, dedicated to his family and service to others.

Francis (Pete) was born in Whiting, Iowa on February 1, 1927 to Quentin and Leola (Deen) Peterson. He was raised in Rembrandt, Iowa until leaving for college. He finished one semester and then was called to serve in WWII in the Army as a paratrooper. After discharge, he went back to Luther College as a student athlete where met his future wife Marilyn Knudson and found his career path. He told the story often about his coach/advisor asking, "What are you going to do when you graduate?". He was directed toward teaching and coaching, resulting in 40+ years of a lifelong passionate journey from teacher to administrator, starting in Bricelyn, MN. He went on to serve the Iowa communities of Laurens, Thompson, Northwood, Cherokee and Decorah, establishing long-lasting friendships.

Francis and Marilyn's 73 years together were truly a loving partnership, active and involved wherever they lived, giving countless hours to local efforts, boards, and fundraising for the greater good. They engaged in their primary hobby of building each home they ever lived in from the ground-up. They pursued travel and ongoing education/service throughout their retirement years.

Francis is survived by wife Marilyn, son Paul, daughter-in-law Charlene, and grandchildren Andy, Laura, and Julie. Also bother Cordell and sister Shirley (Swenson). He is preceded in death by daughter Susan, son-in-law Jim (O'Connor), and sister Beverly (Nolte).

The interment of ashes will take place at the LeRoy, MN Lutheran cemetery on Saturday, June 10 at noon, with lunch to follow. His life will be memorialized at Decorah Lutheran church on Sunday June 11, 2pm, with social hour to follow. Please join us in celebrating his life.
