Frank was born to George and Elizabeth (Miller) Armbrust on April 19, 1924 on the family farm northeast of Belfield, ND. As a young man he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. On January 3, 1948 Frank married the love of his life Shirley Egly. Together they ranched northwest of Belfield until 1980, at which time he moved to Fort Rice and ranched there until 2008 before moving to Mandan. Frank took pride in his cattle. He raised Herefords and later Black Angus. He enjoyed calving season and riding to check the herd. Holidays, family gatherings and branding were always favorite events. Frank was elected to the Billings County School Board and served as President. He also served on the Billings County Selective Service Board, and has been a member of the William C Blair Post #144 Belfield, ND and the Mandan American Legion. He was a life time member of the ND Team Penning Association. Frank was outgoing and social, would tip his hat and open a door like the good ole cowboys used to do. He enjoyed a good cup of coffee while visiting with friends and family. He also loved to play pinochle, whist, and other card games especially with his grandchildren. Frank and Shirley traveled throughout the United States and enjoyed stopping at feed lots and checking out the crops on their way to Arizona for the winter months. A favorite quote of his was “Whether I’ve had a good or bad day, I like to end my day with a smile” Frank will be deeply missed by his daughters, Carol (Thomas) Alesi, TN, Bonnie (Roger Meschke) Armbrust, and Marlene (Steve) Tveito, both of Mandan, ND, Connie O’Brien, Belfield, ND and Tammy (Gregory) Metz, Roseville CA; son, Dennis (Rocky) Armbrust, Dickinson, ND; sister, Bertha (Bob) Makolin, Lake Linden, MI; brothers, Joe Armbrust, Dickinson, ND, George Armbrust, Bowman, ND, and Edward (Sherri) Armbrust, Cedar Rapids, IA; sister-in-law, MaryAnn Armbrust, Fargo, ND; 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley who passed away on December 16, 2012; daughter, Darlene Armbrust; son, Ronald (Bucky) Armbrust; 1 granddaughter, Dea O’Brien, 1 grandson, Jason Petraskiewchz: sisters and brothers-in-law, Magdeline (Albert) Heiser and Anna Marie (Ray) Kilen and one brother Marcus Armbrust.

So very sorry to hear of Frank's passing. How fortunate we were that he was able to visit us in Fargo recently and we so enjoyed visiting with him. He reminds me so much of my dad. Unfortunately we are not able to attend the funeral this week but will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

Tribute To A Cowboy In Loving Memory of FRANK ARMBRUST April 19, 1924 – August 13, 2016 Sadly Missed, Always Remembered, Forever Loved I'm sure God has a ranch in Heaven A place for cowboys to call home With dusty trails and deep passes Where cows and horses freely roam I picture you up on a ledge Gazing at the draws below Leaning forward with your Thirty X Stetson hat pulled way down low I can 'bout hear the leather creaking When your gelding switches feet Your spurs softly jingle in the wind Your rope's tied on and coiled neat There is contentment on your face You're happy, but I can't pretend, Though I'm glad you've made God's journey, That I can truly comprehend In my earthly ways I question The reasons God took you away I guess the timing was exactly right To enter Heaven on that day The only comfort I have found That puts my grief to rest Is that God only takes the top hands Because His crew's the very best We still cry and we sure miss you And all the things that might have been But God needed one more cowboy And He felt you'd fit right in So He sent down all His ranch hands An extra horse stood at their side Then he softly whispered to you "Saddle up, my friend, let's ride" We Love and Miss you Grandpa! Our sympathy to Frank's family. We have fond memories of Frank and Shirley and many family times spent in Belfield at Aunt Edna and Uncle John's (Shirley was Dad's cousin). Both had smiles and laughter that could make your day, they will be missed but the memories cannot be erased. Again, our sympathy and prayers, Jerilyn (Peterson) and Harvey Bieber, Howard (Pete) and Randa Peterson and Janice (Peterson) and Chuck DeFoe

Frank and Shirley were just the best folks. We so enjoyed seeing Frank and "his girls" at Fargo at the birthday party. My brother Denis from CA is arriving on Wednesday and staying till the following Monday. I don't see how I can make the services in Mandan. I'm still trying. I think of Frank with his hat and his smile. MaryAnn
