Frank Guidroz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 16, 2011.
Stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Your every act should be done with love." 1 Corinthians 16:13-15. Frank Guidroz Jr., most beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011. Frank was first-born son of Frank Guidroz Sr. and Lillian Brechtel Guidroz, born to them on April 2, 1930, in Rougon. It is in Rougon where he enjoyed his youth, his adventures with his two brothers and three sisters and where his interest in education began. He graduated in 1946 as salutatorian of Rougon High School. He then went on to graduate from LSU with a bachelor's degree in industrial education in 1950 and master's in industrial arts education in 1956. In his salutatory address to his high school class, wise beyond his age of 16, he encouraged his classmates and friends to "have courage," in his words, "the golden quality," which he would soon proudly display as he served his country as a first lieutenant in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery in battle. All who knew Frank know of his sincere love of God and country. A true patriot, the American flag, as he told his daughters, was the most beautiful sight he beheld, while in service and until the end of his days. Upon his return from the war, he married his "sweetheart," Mary Jane Cifreo, on Dec. 12, 1953. Soon after their marriage, they welcomed their first of four children, all girls, Sonia Faye followed by Brenda Ruth, Linda Ann and Mona Ann. He also began his lifelong much enjoyed professional career in education, first working as guidance counselor and teacher at Central High School and eventually serving as principal of Central Middle School from 1973 to 1981. He found much joy in working with young people, mentoring and serving as positive role model to many of his students, teachers and faculty. He went on to serve as board member and principal of Starkey Academy after his public-school service, retiring in 1990. Frank was a man who accomplished much in his days here with us. He was a featherweight boxing champion in the ROTC, a member of the Future Farmers of America, a member of the academic fraternity Epsilon Pi Tau, East Baton Rouge Parish Teacher of the Year in 1965, a lifetime member of Central High School's Industrial Arts Club and the Louisiana Vocation Association Merit Award Winner of 1965. He was an avid sportsman with a true passion for all nature and the bayous of south Louisiana, where he loved to hunt and fish, possessed talent beyond measure in his carpentry skills, taught drafting at Southeastern Louisiana University. He also co-founded K&F Builders with Ken Montgomery and together they built homes for many people, a number of whom became close friends. Frank shared a lifelong friendship with Ken and many others that was timeless, based on mutual respect and brotherly love to all who knew him as a great man and friend. Frank's most remarkable accomplishment is his eternal legacy of love for his family. He protected, supported, adored and loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He lived by example and was a proud man with great dignity, instilling in all a responsibility of truth, honor and hard work. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jane Guidroz, who cared endlessly for him during their 57 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Sonia Faye and Brooks Hearn, Brenda Ruth and Jeff Bates, Linda Ann and David Miller and Mona Ann and Peter Rafeedie. His surviving grandchildren are Kayla Kinchen Kulhanek, Kale Guidroz Kinchen, Amie Kristen Faul, Mandy Lauren Faul, Cara Belello D'Agostino, Erika Leigh Belello, Dwayne Belello Jr., Theodore Jacob Miller, Jena Frank Laird, Jules Logan Laird, Alexis Rafeedie and Patrick Rafeedie. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Dominic D'Agostino. His surviving siblings are Lillian Sullivan, George Guidroz, John Guidroz and Vera White. He also was a beloved uncle to many adoring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, James Carroll Laird III, like his grandfather, a courageous young man who also shared his love of hunting and fishing. Also preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lillian Guidroz; and a sister, Ruth Major. Pallbearers for the service are Kale Guidroz Kinchen, Dwayne Belello Jr., Jules Logan Laird, Samuel D'Agostino, Casey Kulhanek, Patrick Rafeedie and Edmund Major Jr. Honorary pallbearers are James Carroll Laird III, and Ken Montgomery. Visiting on Thursday, Feb. 17, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11441 Goodwood Blvd., from 11:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Matt Lorrain, celebrant. Missing you today, but filled with love for the best Dad we could have ever wished for. You taught us so much about what is important in life...faith, family, friends, a person's character, value, principles...the list goes on and on. Thank you for all that you sacrificed for us and your legacy of love. So proud to be your daughter. Happy Father's Day in heaven with James. Love, Blondie

Daddy: Every year when Valentines comes, from the time I was small, I remember you always bringing me a box of candy. I appreciate you making me feel special. I remember waiting for you to get home, listening for your keys jingling in your pocket. Thank you for loving me. The boxes were always heart shaped and I always felt special because of you.

Love Note

I remember Christmas of 1973
We lived in a small house on Ridgemont Drive
But it was filled with our family and love
I got a “Spirograph” with pens of all different colors
I was learning how to write

I wrote a note to you
It simply said
“I love you, Daddy”

I was proud of it
I wrote it in green
And cut it out with scissors very carefully

Many years later when I was going through your desk
In your office in Comite Hills where I wasn't allowed
I came upon the note….

I stood there for a minute and thought to myself
How much you loved me for keeping it
In a place where you could see it
And look at it when you wanted

I love you, Daddy
I miss you

You were the best Dad in the world
And my life has been blessed simply
Because I am your daughter

Flags flying on Father's Day

June 20, 2011

The flags, such an appropriate tribute
How you loved the stars and stripes,
Just like you told me, when you saw it, you knew you were home

We all miss you - especially the first Father's Day we ever had without you here.

Love you, Daddy

Thinking of you all day today
You were the best Dad in the whole world
You taught us so much and loved us more
We know you are smiling down upon us all from heaven with that same smile we always saw here on earth

To the greatest man - missing you this Father's Day and every day.

Love you, Blondie

Daddy,

This is the first Easter without you, and it is also James' 21st birthday. We have been thinking about both of you today as we do every day. Yet we now have some comfort that you two are together in Heaven.

You were a born teacher; a man who inspired others to learn. You were also born to work with your hands; hands that we held until you took your last breath. But mostly you were born to love and care for us and for that we are so grateful. In the end, this love is all we have, and it is in our hearts forever.

We love you and miss you. Brenda Ruth

Daddy: There is not a day that goes by that I am not reminded of how lucky I am to be your daughter. I read a note today you wrote to Mama when we moved in the house you built for us 31 years ago. It was the sweetest note any husband ever wrote to any wife. You were telling her you hoped she was as excited about having the beautiful house as you were about building it for her. You also gave her a little gift for her patience and told her to enjoy herself while you took care of "the girls." You always took care of all of your girls. No one could have ever done a better job and no father was ever more loved. With each day that passes, I am constantly amazed at your sincerely gracious generous kind and loving spirit. You knew the secret to life - you were the most joyous giver. It gave you joy to make others happy. That house will stand forever - your house you "built with your own hands" with pride for all of us, a gift of many that gave us all such great lives.
Miss you, Daddy
Wish you were here to tell me the things that I would only believe coming from you, that I will see you and James again because you always told me the truth and I could always trust and count on you.
Love you, Daddy.

Happy birthday, Daddy.
I miss you and I love you.
Thank you for teaching me what is important in life - like green grass, blue sky, freedom for which you fought, and love for a child. You are with mine now and I can't wait to see you both again.

Your baby

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Frank. He was one of the first principals to give me a chance to prove myself when I started my career as a yearbook representative and work with Mrs. Guilliot and Mrs. Degas at Central Middle school. When I could catch up and keep up with him, I always enjoyed my visits with him. May the God of peace comfort you in your loss.

Mr. Frank Guidroz Family,
What a beautiful memorial tribute and such wonderful memories of him. Mr. Frank was a favorite teacher of mine in high school at Central. One of my great memories was when he sent me to find a board stretcher and bring it back to him. I was in the nineth grade, everyone knew but me what he was doing. He enjoyed playing jokes on his students, and that was one of the reasons we all Loved him. I'll never forget that day. He will always be a GREAT MAN. God Bless.

Mr. Guidroz was a warm, loving person who was an inspiration to many, many people. I learned so much from him about children and teaching. At both Central Middle and Starkey Academy I found that he always had an "open door" and was available to anyone who needed help or advice. The Central community is blessed because of Frank Guidroz and his dedication to the schools in the community. I will miss him.

To my sweet Aunt Dokey, Brenda, Sonia, Linda and Mona,

I have so many wonderful memories of him. He was my favorite uncle. He would light up a room when he walked in. I was always proud to say he was my uncle. Dominic loved him as much as I did. He would always brag to his clients that he was my uncle. You should be very proud of all of his accomplishments, he was a great man. He is resting in peace with our "Dear Lord". Just think "Uncle Frank the newest angel in Heaven". He is looking down on his family and saying "my wife and girls loved me so much". Love you Uncle Frank.

To my " Precious Aunt Dokey" and my beautiful cousins Sonia, Brenda, Linda, Mona and their families:

I am so saddened by "Uncle" Frank's death. I know for certain that we never lose the people we love even to death. They continue to participate in every thought and decision we make. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched having shared love. Uncle Frank was the best uncle in the world to me. He was always so loving and kind and I will cherish that forever. I have such wonderful memories of him when I was growing up. I will always remember his sweet smile!
