Frank Lenz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 17 to Mar. 19, 2019.
(News story) Frank J. Lenz, who could hold the attention of an audience, whether discussing Russian history with high school students or the best way to cook a steak with customers at the butcher shop he managed, died Thursday at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, South Detroit Avenue. He was 72.

Mr. Lenz of Oregon had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his wife, Christine McGrellis, said.

He taught at Penta Career Center in Perrysburg Township for nearly 15 years, until 2012. His focus was American government, but he and another social studies teacher, David Harms, created a world issues class.

Mr. Harms was new to Penta in 2002 and years younger, yet Mr. Lenz "would treat you like family. He would treat me like a peer. We worked really well together," Mr. Harms said.

"He was totally different from me. He was a talker. When he talked, everybody stopped and listened. He had so much intelligence and background and knowledge. He was the smartest person I ever knew."

Mr. Lenz taught at the all-girls McAuley High School in South Toledo from the 1970s into the 1980s, with a focus on Russian, Chinese, and Japanese history. He accompanied students on several class visits to the former Soviet Union.

"He was excited about what he knew, and he wanted to convey that interest to the girls," his wife said.

He visited post-Soviet Russia in a teacher exchange, and in 2004 at Penta, played host to teachers from Russia who were getting a view of education here. He also visited China.

Mr. Lenz coached the McAuley basketball team for six years and in the 1990s coached Catholic Youth Organization boys basketball.

Mr. Lenz, whose father had been a meatcutter, worked weekends at Lee Williams House of Meats in Oregon for several years while at McAuley. He then made it his full-time work and became a store manager.

"I worked with him as a teenager there," his son said. "He had a charming personality, an affable character. He was willing to work with people. He could find the middle in any situation where both parties could be happy."

Formerly of Princeton Drive in South Toledo, Mr. Lenz joined neighbors in planning for the centennial in the early 2000s of their Harvard Terrace community.

He was a former officer of the Democratic Club in South Toledo and was active in the Lucas County Democratic Party.

At Penta, he was the one to organize colleagues for summertime get-togethers.

"No restaurant could cook a steak like he did," Mr. Harms added.

He was born Dec. 25, 1946, to Hilda and Frank X. Lenz. He was a 1964 graduate of Central Catholic High School, and received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Toledo in 1970.

As Mr. Harms, his Penta colleague, pursued a doctorate, they'd talk about the research and the writing, and Mr. Lenz agreed to read drafts of the dissertation. When Mr. Harms got discouraged, "he would always talk me back into it - 'You got this,' " Mr. Harms said. "He was a natural teacher. He was looking out for everybody."

Surviving are his wife, Christine McGrellis, whom he married in 2010; sons, Ryan, Jordan, and Trevor "Sam" Lenz; and brother, the Rev. Michael Lenz.

Visitation will be from 4-8 pm. Monday at Freck Funeral Chapel, Oregon. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church in South Toledo, where the body will be after 11 a.m.

The family suggests tributes to Little Sisters of the Poor.

Ah, Mr. Lenz! You will be missed by many who have been impacted by your massive legacy. I'm not sure how you would be scored by today's pedagogical and very particular standards; however, all who knew you would attest to the master teacher you were. I doubt you consciously structured an anticipatory set for your lessons, or differentiated sets of activities, or formative assessments, but I do know you were a brilliant and passionate teacher whose students assimilated your passion and knowledge almost mystically. Your lecture notes (at least in the 70's when I was in your classes) were ridiculously disorganized and seemingly random, but guess who had to learn to take better notes? Guess who had to go home and make sense out of the messy wealth of history you slipped us? Guess who learned more about how to learn by having to do that? We did!
I had the unusual set of opportunities to be taught by Mr. Lenz, and to work with him as a colleague, and to take a class with him, and to sit at a parent conference with him (HE was the parent! Hi, Ryan). I want to write pages, but let my summary include a deeply sincere gratitude for the passion for history and for life that I and all my McAuley friends caught from Mr. Frank Lenz.

Wait, one story! I was told about a time when Frank was teaching at PENTA. Block schedules had recently been added, lengthening the class periods. Some teachers worried about holding student attention spans for longer, but not the history teacher. Apparently, he was teaching in a modular unit separate from the main building and couldn't hear the bell for class change. He carried on, going well over even the extra time added to the class. Eventually, an administrator had to go out to his classroom and tell him, Mr. Lenz, class ended over 20 minutes ago. These students need to go to their next class! He hadn't noticed, and neither had they. Now that's student engagement!

To Mr. Lenz! Source of a great gain through the years, and a gaping loss today. I and some members of the bicentennial class will be convening soon and shall drink a toast to you while we share fond memories of our McAuley days with you.
Affectionately,
Susan (Claus) Muller, 76

I will never forget being in Mr.Lenz class at McAuley when a streaker ran through the halls. Mr. Lenz ran after him...a true gentleman protecting his students. He was a teacher that made learning fun. Thank-you for the memories, I will never forget you.

Thank you Mr Lenz for being such a fabulous teacher and an inspiration to all the students that you taught. My days at McAuley High School (class of 73) were more enriched because you were my teacher. I have thought of you often over the years. Thank you for being such a kind wonderful man and all the hearts that you touched.

I'm so sorry for your loss. He was my teacher at McAuley High School and I participated in one of his trips to the USSR. What a great teacher he was. So funny and nice. My deepest sympathy to your family and to everyone who knew and loved him.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

My sincere condolences. Without a doubt, Frank Lenz was a phenomenal teacher. I've known very few truly gifted educators but Frank Lenz and Mark Prajsner (RIP) were at the very top. He taught me to love and explore history (I married a social studies teacher, go figure). I'm sure he was a dandy meat cutter but the lives he enhanced as a teacher will be his legacy.

My dad used to play with Frank when they were children, and I remember my grandparents speaking of his parents when I was a child myself (my grandfather was a cousin). I reached out to him at the suggestion of my father when I was trying to piece together missing parts of my family tree. As soon as I explained who I was, he was warm and gracious, and very helpful. My sincere condolences to all of you. It seems he was an extraordinary man!

My friend Frank, he was not only one of my closest friends, but he was also an amazing teacher! He taught me so much and even helped me travel to China. He was the most knowledgeable person in Russian history I ever met. Frank was always supportive throughout all of my endeavors, my Masters, my Ph.D., teaching at Lourdes, teaching at Penta Career Center...he always had Werther's at school and I will always think of him whenever I eat one or drink from a pewter cup (which was his favorite). Every time I would play acoustic at one of his excellent steak cookouts, he would ask for "Imagine" by John Lennon. His classroom was beside mine, and I had the privilege of walking past and seeing him teach, his students loved his class...he was an amazing person. He was always interested in what I was doing and asked how the band was doing the last time I spoke to him. I am going to miss you Frank, but I know you are going to a better place...you were one of the good ones! Your friend, Dr. David Harms

Mr.Lenz was my favorite high school teacher at Penta. The enthusiasm and compassion he brought to the classroom was awesome. I'll never forget the time he got real excited for me the time my "faux bill" got passed through our "faux Congress" and I got 10 points of extra credit! Haha! He made class fun even if it was just boring old government stuff... but he loved it. He also taught my mother while she was in high school at McAuley. He will be surely missed.
