Frankie Torres Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 10, 2023.
Edit to announce proclamation by the City of Austin that October 14, 2024 is officially Frankie Torres Day.

Frankie Torres, of Manor, TX passed away of injuries received in an automobile accident on October 5, 2023. Frankie was just 51 years old.

Frankie was born and raised in Austin, TX and was the fifth of six children. He was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he proudly and often talked about. He was a fantastic father, husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, mentor, and a resilient figure in the face of adversity. Outside of his family, Frankie's greatest joys were fishing, and any opportunity to cook or BBQ. He was an incredibly hard worker and was very proud to work for the City of Austin and of his recent placement on the Executive Board of the On Point Reentry Consortium.

Anyone who knew Frankie was touched by his kindness, humor, and infectious personality. He had an unassuming and disarming smile that could put anyone at ease. Through his mentoring and volunteering he touched the lives of so many people and had a gift of making everyone feel like family.

Frankie will forever be remembered and missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Frankie is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Pedro and Pauline Martinez, fraternal grandparents Andrew Torres and Elizabeth Herrera, Uncle Paul Torres, Aunt Mary Rendon, and his beloved brother Andrew (Boy) Torres III.

Frankie is survived by his wife Carol; children Frankie, Jonathan, Jeremiah, Carolina and Stephanie; father Andrew Torres II; mother Lupita Torres; father in law Ray Rangel; mother in law Christina Estrada; siblings Gina Torres Baker, Ida Castaneda, Demetria Torres-Gaytan, Lorie Torres; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandchildren.

A casual "Celebration of Life" will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 12 - 4 pm at Chicano Park in Austin, TX.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up for his twin boys continued education, which was very important to Frankie.

Attending an internal meeting for City of Austin Employees, interested in learning about the application/interview process within the City of Austin. Playing Jeopardy after the presentation, just to check how much info we retained. What I learned from Mr. Frankie Torres, is that there is an Employment Assistance Division within the City of Austin Human Resources, that offers:
-Learning how to search and apply for City jobs.
-Get help setting up a City of Austin Employment application.
-Develop or review your resume to make it more competitive in today´s job market.
-Provide assistance and advice on preparing for your next interview.
-Provide information about other Community resources available to job seekers.

Mr. Frankie Torres embodied professionalism and was very trustworthy and reliable. Once I knew that these resources existed for applicants, both external and internal, I began to provide others with the contact and resource information. Mr. Frankie Torres remained consistent in his customer service delivery. I referred my husband, a cousin, and some co-workers to Frankie. They all confirmed the validity of my statement, when I told them that "Frankie Torres" was a serious individual, committed to providing guidance and direction to City of Austin Job applicants. He made a positive impact in my life and the lives of others. I just recently discovered that Mr. Torres passed away. I was saddened to hear this, as I was thinking of sending another co-worker his way. I wanted to come here to share my memories and the lasting impact of Mr. Torres' impeccable work ethic. My most sincerest and deepest condolences to his family. May you be comforted in knowing that Mr. Torres made a solid impact to many within the City of Austin family. God bless you.

It doesn´t seem like a whole year has passed since Frankie left us. Sometimes it feels like just yesterday, and for the longest time I would wait for him to walk into the office and say, "Hola, Ms. Jay. I brought you breakfast." It still feels surreal at times. I continue to pray for his family and friends and remember his passion for helping others. He was a great person, one of a kind and I was blessed to call him my colleague and friend. Rest easy, Frankie T!

I can't believe it has been a year since my best friend ever passed. I first met Frankie over 20 years ago, when I was his case manager with Project RIO. I knew then that he was a special young man and I let him know that I told him, stick with me buddy and I will help you on your journey to rebuild your life. He did and we became good friends and he was always there when I needed him. He had a way to brighten your day, if you were feeling bad, and every morning he would call me to check on me and see how I was doing. When he passed it was really hard for me to not pick up the phone and wonder why he was not calling me. Every day I think about him and the loss to this community. We had so many plans on what programs we were going to do with the youth and with APD and prison work. He was so very very proud of his boys and always talked about them. He loved his wife so very much too. He loved his girls too. He was a family man indeed. I know he is watching over them and making sure that they stay on the right path and celebrate their love for one another and hold each other dear. Frankie, my BFF, you will always hold a dear place in my heart and I will never, ever forget you. May God hold you close to his heart. Miss you terribly my friend. You are always in my thoughts and my heart.

I met Frankie and Carol when our sons played on a basketball together when they were very young. We always had a great time, he and Carol were great parents and a lot of fun. I lost contact for years, but recently ran into Frankie again when I started working for the City of Austin. He was a great person. My prayers are with Carol and the kids.

Frankie was a dear friend to my mom, Mary Moran. She cherished their conversations and thought of Frankie as a son. He often called her "best friend".
Frankie was an inspiration to many and his memory will live on through his children and the work On Point ReEntry Consortium will continue in his name.

My condolences to the family and friends of Frankie. He was an asset to the community in many ways and his presence will be missed. His work with the community was vast, recognized and valued by his city of Austin peers. Frankie impacted so many coworkers he didn't even know so much more than he could have ever known. Oftentimes, his help with the re-entry programs impacted not just the person he helped but the friend, spouse, partner, sibling, parent or child of a coworker. God bless him on his journey upward where he will continue to serve in a much greater capacity.

About 4 years ago, Frankie gave me a tour of the DeWitty Center. He was so knowledgeable of the services DeWitty offered. I remember him being so kind and friendly that I thought he was so good at his job. He made such as great impression. From there on, he was my spoc for the DeWitty if I had any questions.

I got to hear Frankie speak at a work retreat and was so impressed with his heart and his dedication! He made an impression on me, I can only imagine the impression he made on the folks he committed himself to helping. His passing is a loss to our community as well as his family and friends - he had so much more to give, and his passion for making a difference was clear to anyone listening. He will be greatly missed.

Such an incredible person! Frankie left an indelible mark and eternal impression on my life in the 9 or so months that we've worked together. It feels like we've known each other much longer than that. Frankie's love for his family was first and foremost. There was never any question about how much each of you meant to him. I think I've heard stories about each one of you. (All good) Jonathan and Jeremiah, it was such a pleasure meeting you. Your dad is and will be missed. He had a heart as large as Texas. Some of my favorite things about Frankie was his choice of phrases: "It's a Code Red. It's the Police. That's my cousin - Nah, I'm just kidding." Frankie's humor and his musical playlist (old school R&B) made our work environment fun and lit. My favorite phrase from Frankie was, "I got you, Ms. Jay. Call me if you need anything." And guess what, he meant it. He was a great person who definitely didn't look like what he'd been through. Praying that God will comfort, strengthen and sustain you during this time of sadness. Rest in Heaven, my friend.

Frankie was always a joy to work with and always had the upmost respect in the workplace for others. He was always upbeat, positive and optimistic. He loved sharing his weekend activities with the team which included watching his sons play baseball and letting us know how they did on their tournaments or BBQ feast with the family. But I'll never forget the love Frankie had for the Eastside and helping the community make it past the barriers we both overcame "coming from the hood". He was a true leader in the city helping others find job placement and reentry into the workplace. A true servant of God in the community. Rest in joy, my brother in Christ and friend from the Eastside. Sending prayers and Gods comfort to all those impacted by Frankie's absence. My deepest condolences to Torres family during this difficult time.
