Fred BOURLAND Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald on Nov. 4, 2011.
BOURLAND, Fred Coleman
Fred Coleman Bourland passed away on November 2, 2011 at Harmony Homes, Red Deer, Alberta. He will be forever remembered and greatly missed by his daughter Kathryn and son-in-law Barrie Hagen. Fred is also survived by his brother, Thomas and sister-in- law Wanzille Bourland of Lubbock, Texas, his brother-in-law Robert and sister-in-law Marie Cowen of Redwater, Alberta, and eight nephews and one niece. Fred was predeceased by his wife Mary "Selina" Bourland (Cowen) on November 13, 2000. He was also predeceased by his sister Georgia and brother-in-law James McCarty of Tucson, Arizona. Fred was born on April 10, 1917 in Matador, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1941 and served overseas in Italy. Fred was on a troop ship in the Panama Canal, en route to the South Pacific during World War II when peace was declared. The G.I. Bill enabled Fred to attend the University of Texas in Austin to obtain his degree in Electrical Engineering. Fred started working for Sun Oil Company which brought him to Canada in June of 1951. Here, he met his wife Selina and they were married on March 28, 1953. Together they helped explore and develop this oil-rich province, making many long- lasting friendships. Fred's career took him from the Louisiana Swamps, through most small towns in Alberta, and into the high Arctic. These diverse experiences provided Fred with ample material, as he was a great storyteller and a true Southern gentleman. Kathryn and Barrie wish to express their gratitude to Renee White and her wonderful staff at Harmony Homes for the care, compassion, and friendship given to Fred over the past five years. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Eventide Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 105, 4807 - 50 Avenue, Red Deer, AB T4N 4A5. Kathryn and Barrie - I was so sorry to hear of your loss and wish I could have been at the service - just to be there for you - as you have been for me. It is so hard to lose a parent and I feel deeply for you.

Kathryn & Barrie:
So sorry unable to attend service today. My thoughts are with you both. Caregivers are unsung heroes and you both are true "heroes in spades". Know that Fred was truly respected for his wealth of knowledge and passion for life. I will miss his easy conversations. He was definitely a true gentleman. My best to you both.
