Fred Cherney 1911 2006 Fred Cherney passed away peacefully at the Royal University Hospital on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at the age of 94. Fred was born on November 10, 1911 on the family homestead west of Theodore, SK. He was the tenth child of ten children born to Nicholas and Wasylena (Ostapowich) Chernipeski. He attended Theodore School and worked on the family farm. At a very young age, Fred ventured out to work for established retailers and wholesalers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. On May 24, 1936, Fred and Victoria (Yarmie) were united in marriage. In 1939 Fred purchased a vacant building, formerly, Bank of Montreal for $1000.00 including a vault and started up his own grocery store business, followed by a department store, lasting all of 34 years. Fred was a community minded person. He served on the Theodore Credit Union, on the Credit Committee and Board of Directors for 24 years, the Foam Lake, Yorkton School Units for six years, as Auction Sales Clerk for 30 years. As a Town Council Member, a member and supporter of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Fred participated in community activities and family events. Fred and Victoria enjoyed curling, attending hockey games, their trips to California to visit Fred's family, and their seasonal business trips to Winnipeg and Montreal. In 1973, Fred and Victoria retired and moved to Saskatoon. Fred's retirement was brief, he accepted a position at the Army and Navy Store in the Men's Department, lasting another seven years. It could be said, Fred's major hobby was, people. He had a life-long love of conversation, talking easily with people of all ages. His memory was phenomenal for remembering names, faces, dates and places. Fred had his own views on a variety of subject matters and was never afraid to share his opinion with others. He brought laughter and smiles with his wit of word phrases and sense of humour. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Fred will be remembered by his nieces, nephews and their extended families, friends, and his very special nieces, Sharon Stone and Constance Kaye. His sisters-in-law, Flora Cherney of Vancouver, BC, Mary Chernesky of Cochrane, AB, Vicky Yarmie of Regina, SK, and Olga Kaye of Saskatoon, SK. Fred was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Victoria (2000); parents, Nicholas and Wasylena Chernipeski; sisters, Maria BilokreliBernard, Catherine Cheropita; stepsisters, Aksana Dumanski, Philia Minken-Kosteneuik; brothers, Steve, Bill, Harry, Alex and Matt; and the family pet poodle, Saloni. The Prayer Service will be held on Sunday, June 18, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at Park Funeral Chapel (311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon). The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 19, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints (2616 Louise Street, Saskatoon). Both services will be officiated by Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Demczuk. The Interment Service will be in Woodlawn Orthodox Cemetery, Saskatoon, SK. Arrangements entrusted to Greg Lalach of PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL, 244-2103. Vichnaya Pamiat!
